The gearheads here at RK Motors Charlotte work around the clock to provide enthusiasts with the best metal money can buy; and when we find a highly detailed Mopar like this 1971 Challenger R/T, it makes all those long hours completely worthwhile. If you’ve been paying attention to the website recently, you already know we’ve had some extremely nice Challengers come through our doors, but this fully sorted show car HAS to top them all! A numbers matching, big block 383 that’s bolted to a numbers matching transmission and wrapped in a paint booth fresh rotisserie restoration which makes the car WAY nicer than any original time capsule: does it get any better? This awesome Mopar also features a solid, mostly original body that’s literally layered in high impact Green Go paint AND it’s priced at roughly half the cost of its labor intensive restoration. Is there a more outrageous high impact color than Dodge’s Green Go? As one of the most appealing hues to come out of Chrysler’s hip 1970s ’brighter is better’ muscle car mindset, code FJ6 green is probably the most dynamic paint to ever adorn classic Mopar metal. And when expertly applied under traditional satin black call-outs and buffed to a show worthy shine, it’s an absolutely glowing reminder as to just how crazy the muscle car era was. This car’s build started with a solid, original shell which was sand blasted to bare metal and augmented with minimal bodywork. Once its panels were as close to perfect as possible, a smooth coat of Epoxy primer was covered with several coats of Z-Chrome rust defender that were correspondingly block sanded every time they cured. When that exceptionally smooth rust defender was ready for paint, three coats of single stage R-M Uno were topped with two coats of 50% R-M Uno, 50% clearcoat and color sanded to the liquid smooth finish you see here. Naturally the car’s flawless, and correct, Green Go paint looks right at home highlighting its rotisserie restored panels, razor sharp lines, and rock solid profile. And the result is a high energy visual masterpiece which oozes the bare knuckle confidence and old school appeal that made Dodge muscle cars the stuff of legends!
Thanks to its high dollar frame-off nut and bolt restoration, this Challenger’s crisp shut lines and spectacular panel alignment present much better today than when it rolled off Dodge Main’s assembly line almost 41 years ago. At the front of the car, a 1971-exclusive split and stainless trimmed grille hangs a showroom fresh “Dodge” emblem between four pristine headlights, clear round parking lights and a mirror-like chrome bumper. At the top of the car an R/T specific hood, which is complete with two small scoops, two pristine “383 Magnum” emblems and a flat black center section, rides in front of brand new glass that is framed by professionally polished stainless and a new vinyl top. At the sides of the car prominent fender lines, which are complemented by new stainless wheel well trim, new flush-fit satin door handles and body-matched sport mirrors, ride under spotless chrome “Challenger” scripts, fresh black “R/T” stripes, a familiar chrome fuel cap and aggressive rear louvers. And at the back of the car, a flat black rear valence hangs a perfectly centered “Challenger” script between pristine, segmented tail lights, a trunk mounted “Dodge” emblem, a second pristine chrome bumper and correct, quad outlet stainless exhaust tips. Unlike most dressed and decaled cars which tend to throw good taste out the window, this super slick Challenger seamlessly balances a cool personality with flashy good looks to create a timeless muscle car which has big time appeal!
Hoist this mean green machine’s sculpted, freshly finished hood and you’ll find an original 383 cubic inch Magnum V8 which wears a correct 2468130 casting number, an August (8) 18th (18) of 1970 (70) casting date and a 413074 partial VIN. Fully balanced, completely rebuilt and professionally detailed during the car’s extensive frame-off restoration this big block mill is good for a nice, round 335 horsepower. At the top of the engine, a dual snorkel air cleaner, which is complete with fresh organisol paint and a bold “383 Magnum” topper, sends air into a chrome Edelbrock 650 carburetor that’s fueled by fresh stainless fuel lines. Below that carburetor glossy, high-temp Hemi Orange coats the outside of the block from its pristine valve covers to its dent-free oil pan; and in front of that carburetor, a new points distributor shoots fire to the inside of the block through new Mopar Electronic Suppression plug wires. Spent gases are whisked into fully restored exhaust manifolds, and roared out of aluminized true dual exhaust pipes thanks to an aggressive Competition camshaft. And cooling is provided by a Chrysler four-core radiator which circulates a steady flow of water around a correct belt driven fan via brand new hoses and a high flow aluminum water pump. At the front of the engine, fresh V-belts spin a familiar alternator next to a rebuilt power steering pump and a new Sanden AC compressor; At the back of the engine, a fresh brake booster hangs a rebuilt master cylinder next to a rebuilt, original wiper motor. And overall, the car’s glossy Chrysler FJ6 Green Go engine bay is virtually spotless and displays an exceptional level of detail, with a molded hood pad, a reproduction Mopar yellow top battery, a correct Chrysler Voltage Regulator, a new washer fluid reservoir and a fresh set of tags and decals all present and accounted for.
This Challenger’s fully restored chassis and drivetrain are just as straight forward and clean as its solid exterior panels and high impact engine bay. The smooth revving Chrysler block churns torque through a professionally rebuilt A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission which, according to its 413074 partial VIN, is original to the car. Behind that transmission, a tough 8.75 Sure Grip rear end makes good use of stout 3.23 gears. And at the ends of the floors, a fully rebuilt and completely powder coated front double A-arm and rear leaf spring suspension helps throw power to the ground and speed to the curves. Braking, which is surprisingly competent for a 41 year old car, comes courtesy of correct power front discs and heavy duty rear drums; and steering duties are handled by an easy twisting factory power steering system. At the corners, new 15 inch Rallye wheels spin fresh F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around satin finished trim rings and brand new center caps. And aesthetically, the bottom of this cool old Mopar is fully detailed and ready for show with spotless green floors framing a modern mandrel bent aluminized exhaust system which includes factory replacement mufflers and correct resonators, individually powder coated leafs springs, a modern mini-starter, a powder coated K-frame, a fresh stainless gas tank and a powder coated axle housing.
Inside this awesome green Mopar, a well-executed, fully restored black vinyl interior is simple, functional and looks as good as new. The front high-back bucket and rear bench seats are showroom fresh and display no signs of any wear at all. Below those seats, new black carpet is sandwiched between color-keyed, “Challenger R/T” floor mats and sound deadening insulation. At the sides of those seats, pristine molded door panels hang wood grain inserts, which are branded with cool, old-school Dodge fratzog emblems, between new chrome door handles, cool chrome lock tabs and four blue tipped window cranks. And above those seats, a taut and wrinkle-free headliner combines with a second layer of sound deadening insulation to keep the cockpit both cool and quiet. At the front of the car, a straight and fade-free dash hangs silk screened wood trim above a correct AM/FM multiplex stereo and controls for the modernized heat and air conditioning system. In the middle of the car, a full console frames a traditional Chrysler T-handle shifter in great looking chrome trimmed wood. And at the back of the car a fully restored trunk, which is complete with a new one-piece trunk pan, props a full-size spare tire and a correctly detailed jack assembly on a fresh-out-of-the-box trunk mat. In front of the driver, a familiar wood rimmed steering wheel spins around a fully rebuilt and precisely calibrated Rallye instrument cluster that’s complete with a standard tachometer, a 150 MPH speedometer and a continuous motion electric clock. And everything from this Challenger’s dome light to its sill plates is fully sorted and ready to hit the road!
Included with the sale of this spotless ’71 E-body is a small book of restoration photos and a few documents from its restorer which outline the car’s restoration process and all its new and rebuilt components.
Fully restored, and virtually new in every way, this old school Dodge is guaranteed to please even the most discerning muscle car enthusiast. And with its great performance and classic good looks, you can drive it, show it and even take home a few trophies all for about half the price of a ‘ropes and red carpet’ car. If you’re looking for an awesome old school Mopar that you can actually enjoy, this Challenger is your kind of car!
