For some reason, people love first generation Camaros. Whether it’s their tasteful good looks, or their excellent performance credentials, or even just sentimentalism about ‘the golden age of the automobile’, these early Chevy pony cars generate attention like few other vehicles do. In fact, one of the coolest parts of owning an F1 Camaro is the constant stream of comments and compliments you get from both car guys and random admirers alike. This striking LeMans Blue 1968 Camaro drop top with custom white stripes and a hot 327 under the hood is sure to elicit double takes and stir up conversation from interested people wherever you go.
Restored to a very high standard, this ’68 Camaro is perfect for cruising around town and spending time at the local shows. The cars solid and dent free body exhibits correct panel fit with a properly functioning hood, trunk and doors and all panel gaps are straight and narrow providing an excellent canvas for GM’s dynamic LeMans Blue paint. Once that bright blue dried, the car was topped with a white Super Sport stripe that flows across the header panel to both front wheel openings, and traditional white Z/28 rally stripes that run from under the convertible boot to the car’s rear valence. The result is a flashy mirror-like body, with a cool stripe package that gives the car a different identity at every angle and, given the factory accuracy of the graphics, looks surprisingly fitting.
Up front, a stainless trimmed ’68 Camaro grille houses clear headlights and parking lights on either side of a centered, vertically oriented Chevrolet emblem. Below that grille, a showroom fresh chrome bumper rides above a correct steel tag bracket that’s mounted to a clean front valence. At the sides of the car, great looking stainless fender trim, chrome GM door handles and a chrome driver’s side mirror give the car a finished look and contrast the deep blue paint very nicely. In keeping with the simplistic theme of the rest of the car, ornamentation is limited to white inlayed chrome “327” emblems at the inside corners of the SS stripe and chrome “Camaro” scripts placed just in front of the doors on the front fenders. At the top of the car, a white vinyl top rises from a stainless trimmed boot to connect to a stainless trimmed windshield which presents as new. At the rear, an option D80 decklid spoiler aligns well with the rear fenders and sits above two clear chrome trimmed tail lights, a body matched fuel filler cap and another show worthy wrap around chrome bumper.
Under the hood you’ll find a clean and reliable 327 cubic inch V8 that’s been painted satin black to match the engine bay. On top of that 327, a satin black single snorkel air cleaner features a correct “327 Turbo Fire” decal and sends air into a big 4 barrel carburetor. Below that 4 barrel carburetor, you’ll find an Edelbrock aluminum intake that houses a correct points distributor which sends sparks through AC Delco Packard suppression wires. At the sides of the intake, black valve covers sit above ceramic coated headers which send gases into a body length true dual exhaust system. In front of the engine, fresh V-belts spin a correct fan and a cool chrome alternator, and on the right side of the motor, a correct Delco battery features an aftermarket kill switch. The engine bay is clean from its stainless fender braces to its straight fire wall, and the engine fires up nicely, idles smoothly, and can be driven all day long.
That reliable 327 is backed by the cars original Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission which sends power to a 10 bolt rear end with a stainless differential cover. All chassis and suspension equipment appears to be in good shape and power steering and power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition to handling. A new aluminized exhaust system runs from the cars headers into Ultra Flo performance mufflers, and the cars new brake booster sends fluid through recently replaced hoses and fresh stainless lines. At the corners, 15 inch silver rally wheels are mounted to F70-15 Goodyear Redline tires and capped by nice stainless trim rings and correct Chevrolet stamped stainless center caps. Built for the street, the bottom of this car wasn’t detailed to the nines, but the undercoating is tidy and all the panels are clean and free of rust and dents. Mechanically, the car feels sound and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across town or across the state.
Inside the car, a standard blue vinyl interior looks completely natural against the cars bright blue exterior paint and provides a comfortable cruising environment. The front bucket and rear bench seats are in great shape and feel so firm that they must have received new foams during the recent restoration. At the sides of the seats, front and rear door panels present well and feature correct stainless trim, correct black “Camaro” emblems and chrome door and window handles. Below the seats, good looking blue carpet is protected by blue rubber floor mats and presents very little fading, despite being mounted in an open top car. On top of the carpet, a nice blue console houses the cars horseshoe shifter for the automatic transmission inside of chrome trimmed wood applique that nicely contrasts the blue interior. Above the console, the dash houses cool looking rebuilt gauges with brushed stainless faces, controls for the cars heater/defroster and a correct radio. In front of the driver you’ll find a fantastic looking silver spoked steering wheel that features black accents and a matching blue rim. Behind the back seat a matching blue convertible boot sits above a correctly restored trunk which includes a houndstooth mat, a correct spare tire and a correct jack.
Documentation for this car includes an owner’s manual and a few restoration photos.
