It's no secret that 1955 Chevrolets are some of the most popular classics in existence. Since RK Motors Charlotte sells some of the nicest collector cars on the planet, we've recently featured some fine 'tri-fives' that have fetched some serious money. You may remember this "(external)LS6 powered showstopper":http://www.rkmotorscharlotte.com/sales/inventory/sold/1955-Chevrolet-Bel-Air/132711 we sold late last year for $109k. Or perhaps this "(external)999-point national award winner":http://www.rkmotorscharlotte.com/sales/inventory/sold/1955-Chevrolet-210/132418 that left for $119k without breaking a sweat. And since our enthusiasts can't seem to get enough of Chevrolet's legendary '55, we're bringing you yet another top notch Bel Air that is truly in a league of its own. The recipient of an extensive frame-off rotisserie restoration, this car has to be the nicest custom 1955 Chevrolet we have featured. With a fuel-injected big block, world class body and paint work and a custom interior worthy of a multi-million dollar exotic, it's a near-perfect execution of modern build ideals and classic good looks. If you're ready to dominate the show circuit, look no further.

Like many builds, this one started with little more than a clean shell in primer. With a clear vision in mind, countless hours were invested in subtle custom body work that takes this car to the next level. The more obvious body modifications such as shaved door handles and a smoothed cowl vent are easily spotted but, like any good custom, the beauty is in the details. Further inspection reveals the firewall has been smoothed and recessed to accommodate the big block. Inner fender wells were also smoothed, offering the engine bay an impressive custom look. The thoughtful details continue underneath the car where even the floor pans have been smoothed and painted body color. Regardless if you're beside, under, or on top of this car, every angle is laser straight. All of this body work is covered by an impeccable two-tone paint scheme that utilizes PPG's Mercedes Silver and Tuxedo Black. The paintwork is free of imperfections and shows remarkably well in even the harshest of light.

To keep up with the sleek and simple design, trim was kept to a bare minimum. You won't find side mirrors, hood ornaments, rocker trim, an antenna or any other piece of extraneous chrome on this '55. What you will find are several custom pieces of brightwork in better-than-showroom condition. A custom front bumper resides under the Ferrari-inspired wide-mouth grill while modern halogen headlights round out the hyper-clean front end. Traditional side moldings serve to break up the silver and black paint while adding just the right amount of flash. Out back, a station wagon bumper brings the license plate mount down from the decklid. giving the trunk a smooth custom look. If something seems different around the A-pillar, it's the deleted side-vent window. Check out one of our other '55 Chevrolets that retains that window and then come back to this one. It may seem like a small change but it modernizes the car in a big way.

Lift the shaved hood and you'll find an immaculate bay. Nearly every piece is either polished, chromed, or painted. Up front, a polished PRC aluminum core support, radiator and condenser keeps everything cool while setting the tone for the rest of the engine compartment. At center stage, there's a GM Performance 502 V8 block stuffed with forged internals. A Hilborn EFI unit controlled by a F.A.S.T programmable ECU handles fuel delivery while giving the 502 some street manners. Despite the touch of technology, wiring has been expertly hidden from plain sight. On the front of the block, you'll find a chrome serpentine setup running all the creature comfort items such as the Vintage Air compressor. Who says going fast means being uncomfortable? A set of custom finned valve covers with traditional Chevrolet script add a touch of the nostalgia to the otherwise modern bay. The big block breathes through a set of long tube headers that feed into a thermal coated true dual exhaust with a pair of Flowmaster mufflers doing what they can to quiet the rumble.

Supporting all that horsepower is a Keisler Tremec 5-speed manual transmission with a Lakewood scatter-proof bell housing and an 11-inch hydraulic clutch. From there, power is channeled into a polished Currie 9-inch rear end housing 4.11 gears. When your right foot digs a little too deep into the throttle, a set of CalTrac-style traction bars do their part to keep the back end planted. When the roads get twisty, cornering capabilities are provided by a Heidt's Super Ride front suspension with 2” drop spindles in front and 3” drop leafs in the rear. Large front and rear sway bars are also in place. Stopping power is provided by a Wilwood disc brake system with slotted rotors on all four corners while a set of 17” x 8” / 20” x 10” American Racing Wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich G-force tires make final contact with the road. With a fully powder coated frame and a thermal coated gas tank to match the exhaust, the undercarriage is every bit as show worthy as the rest of this Bel Air.

Inside, the sleek modern look continues with a masterful red leather interior stitched by Chuck Hanna of Hot Rod Interiors. If you're familiar with Hanna's work, you already know that absolutely no corners have been cut inside this '55. The dash retains a familiar shape but is a custom fabricated piece with Dakota Digital gauges and minimalistic knobs that control the Vintage Air unit. An adjustable Flaming River steering column is topped with a custom three spoke steering wheel that matches the vehicle's attitude perfectly. Every where the eye goes, there are new details to be found: A certain pattern repeated on the door handles and seat buttons, a distinctive type of mesh applied to the rear speaker grill, door panels and kick panels. This is smart design that easily crosses the line into art. Of course there are plenty of modern conveniences such as LED interior lighting and a hidden Pioneer head unit that make this Chevy as comfortable to live with as any other modern vehicle.

With such an extensive build it's fair to expect documentation. In this case, there is plenty of it. The Bel Air comes with a photo album full of build pictures as well as a massive pile of brochures, manuals and part numbers for nearly every piece on the car. Should you ever have a question about how something went together, your answer is provided. There is also a healthy list of awards the car has won including:

Street Rodder Top 100 Pick 2011
Super Chevy 2011 Gold Class
Top 25 Shades of the Past 2011
