You already know RK Motors Charlotte is Winged Warrior Central in the past three years, we’ve had more than a few of these, including our spectacular restored HEMI Daytona that set several price records when it sold earlier this year. Well, here’s the follow-up: a gorgeous HEMI Superbird with just 16,905 original miles, a beautifully preserved Chrysler Corporation broadcast sheet, and a 100% original interior. It has been featured on TV shows, in calendars, books and magazines, and headlined a big-name auction. Our restored car was undoubtedly the nicest in the world, but this one is something else entirely. By now, everyone knows the Superbird story, so I’m not going to go into details about the reasons these amazing cars were built. But when a car is outlawed from NASCAR racing because it’s too fast, you know you’ve done something right. Too radical for most buyers when they were new, today they’re highly-sought collectibles that live at the top of the Mopar food chain. This one also sports a complete Chrysler Corporation broadcast sheet, and here are the details from the fender tag (although it appears that this is a Lynch Road car, so you know what those tags are like):

Never fully restored because it never needed it this Superbird presents in excellent condition throughout. It was repainted several years ago, but the body remains 100% OEM steel and there are no patches, panel replacements, or other questionable areas. The only reason this car was painted was because the original Tor-Red paint was getting a little tired. It’s anything but tired now, with the fresh 2-stage urethane popping off the wild curves of this car. And with a blue-chip vehicle such as this, you know the gaps and alignment were properly adjusted, the nose fits better than they ever did from the factory (which isn’t hard to do factory fit was terrible), and the headlight doors operate properly with no binding.
All the signature pieces that make the Superbirds unique are here, too, from the scoops on top of the front fenders to the outrageous adjustable wing out back. This car was on the cover of Paul Herd and Mike Mueller’s authoritative book on the Charger, Road Runner, and Super Bee, so you know it’s spectacular in person. There isn’t a lot of chrome on these cars, with the front ends being replaced with the aerodynamic nose cone, but items like the rear bumper are in excellent condition. The stainless trim, much of which is unique, has been polished to new condition. Glass is all original, of course, and is virtually blemish-free. And the vinyl top is so nice, I’m assuming that it was replaced when the body was repainted, although it’s possible that it could be original given the cars exceptionally low mileage.
The engine bay was fully restored to show condition recently, including a full engine tear-down and inspection. We have detailed photos of the entire process that shows all the relevant casting numbers, which suggest the engine is a correct code WT warranty replacement unit. Since it was in such good condition, the engine needed no replacement parts, so it was carefully reassembled and runs beautifully today. The rest of the engine compartment was fully detailed at the same time, with fresh Tor-Red paint, new hoses and clamps, correct inspection markings, and all the original components that were removed were cleaned and reinstalled. The massive air cleaner was reinstalled, and a new red cap battery was installed to complete the show-quality engine compartment.
Underneath, the chassis is ready for show. Finishes are correct, markings are still visible throughout, and even the floors look as nice as the day it rolled off the assembly line. Obviously, on a low-mileage car like this, the components are in excellent condition, from the non-matching numbers but correct 1-year only, B-Body only, HEMI-only HD 727 TorqueFlite transmission, to the 8.75-inch rear packing 3.55 gears and a Sure Grip limited slip. Look closely at the details like the control arms and steering linkage correctly finished in every way. The exhaust system is recently installed, however, just to ensure that everything is up to the same high standards throughout. Wheels are correct original Rallyes wearing reproduction Goodyear Polyglas tires. The 100% original interior is the jewel in this cars crown.
After 40 years, you would think that age would have caught up with the soft parts, but that’s not the case here. Instead, you have an all-original driver’s compartment that looks better than any reproduction setup ever could. There’s no fading or discoloration even on the contrasting silver details, no splits in the seams, and almost no wear on the carpets. If any passengers have ever been in the back seat, they were careful and conscientious people, and left no marks behind. The headliner is taut and the seat belts, usually the first things to fade, are still shiny and black. The dashboard and gauges are untouched and look factory fresh. Door panels show no trace of cracking or sun damage, and no wayward scratches from a passenger’s button or zipper. The trunk is equally well preserved, and that’s very likely the original spare tire back there, which has never seen the pavement. This car could easily be the benchmark for future interior restorations.
As I mentioned earlier, this car is very nicely documented with a gorgeous Chrysler Corporation broadcast sheet that came from behind the back seat. It also has a certificate of authenticity verifying its matching numbers status, original owners manuals, and a stack of photos from the engine detail session that show all the relevant stampings and casting numbers. This car also took second in its class at the 1990 Mopar Nationals, and there’s a judging sheet included, although it’s important to note that the 2nd place was awarded before all the detailing was done, so the car would likely score much higher today. Finally, there’s a copy of the reference book on Superbirds, which features this car extensively as a benchmark for authenticity.
Look at the relevant details again HEMI Superbird with just 16,905 original miles. Well documented, this car can be shown at the highest levels with confidence. A lot of so-called experts claim the Hemi market is in decline, but our sales record suggests otherwise. Offered at about half the price of the restored Daytona we sold a few months ago, this one could almost be considered a bargain. If you’re a fan of these cars, your collection isn’t complete without a HEMI Superbird. Call today!
