Assembled at GM’s Norwood Ohio assembly plant in October of 1969, this Camaro was originally delivered to Joe V. Clayton Chevrolet in Arab Alabama. During an expertly performed nut and bolt rotisserie restoration the car was re-sprayed in its original, highly desirable GM code 76 Daytona Yellow paint and topped with correct gloss black Z/28 rally stripes. The body on this car is absolutely top level with straight and narrow gaps, smooth panels that are free of flaws and excellent detail work. At the front of the car, a straight silver grille is trimmed in stainless and houses two correct T3 headlights on either side of a pristine red and silver “Z/28” emblem. Below the grille, a show quality chrome bumper sits above crystal clear marker lights and a factory optioned D80 chin spoiler. Above the grille, a functional factory optioned ZL2 cowl induction hood wears white inlayed “302” emblems which perfectly complement a black and chrome “Camaro by Chevrolet” emblem on the left side of the car’s header panel. The cars optional A01 Soft Ray tinted glass windows present as new and are surrounded by clean, mirrored stainless trim and straight chrome drip moldings that are in excellent shape. Above the glass, a correct option C08 black vinyl top show no signs of cracking or fading and looks as fresh as the day the car rolled off the assembly line. On the sides of the car, the correct optional Z21 style trim group adds bright stainless wheel well openings and Rally Sport style chrome louver trim just in front of the rear fenders, and optional B93 stainless door edge guards protect the paint from careless chips. Centered at the leading edges of the front fenders you’ll find bold red and silver “Z/28” emblems in front of factory fresh chrome trimmed marker lights. Just behind the front tires, chrome “Camaro” scripts shine almost as well as the cars like-new chrome GM door handles and correct chrome driver’s side mirror. Pristine stainless moldings that run along the cars rocker panels combine with black inlayed stainless trim around the vinyl top to give the car a detailed and finished look. On the trunk, another great looking “Camaro by Chevrolet” emblem sits inside the black stripes just ahead of a correct option D80 rear decklid spoiler. Below that spoiler, the car’s rear valence houses excellent looking segmented tail lights and a fourth red and silver “Z/28” emblem above another show worthy chrome bumper which is complete with vertical chrome bumper guards. Below the cars roll pan, polished 2 inch exhaust tips exit from under the car in correct Camaro Z/28 fashion.
Pop the hood of this awesome Z/28 and you’ll find the cars original VIN stamped 302 cubic inch V1003DZ motor which decodes as a Flint Michigan (V) produced, Camaro Z/28 exclusive (DZ) block that was assembled on the third (03) day of October (10) in 1969 and has a casting date of I199, or September (I) 19th (19) 1969 (9). Conservatively rated from the factory at 290 horsepower, this high performance 302 utilized rectangular port heads, a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, four-bolt mains and forged aluminum pistons create an SCCA worthy 11 to 1 compression ratio and around 370 actual horsepower. At the top of the motor a functional and correct ZL2 style satin black air filter displays a correct “302 Turbo Fire” lid decal and a correct side mounted AC decal. Under that air filter, a correct Holley 4 barrel carburetor is fed by stainless fuel lines and controlled by a light green spring. Under that carburetor, a correct Winter aluminum intake sits between correct double hump heads that wear bright finned aluminum Corvette valve covers. At the sides of the motor, correct cast iron exhaust manifolds display no rust at all, include correct heat shields and send exhaust into a correct reproduction exhaust system. At the back of the motor, a correct 9E13 date coded and 1111480 part numbered distributor sends power through correct Packard Suppression wires. And at the front of the motor, a correct date coded 9E23 and 1100837 part numbered alternator sits behind a correct G69 date coded and 3947772 part numbered fan which is turned by fresh V-belts. In front of that fan, a correct radiator with a date code J overflow tank sits under a correct fan shroud next to a reproduction Delco battery. The engine compartment in this ’69 Camaro is top notch in every way including correct GM hoses and tower clamps, correct overspray, detailed chalk markings, correct hood insulation and nicely finished Chevy Orange and satin black paint. The car even still retains its original pulleys, 9204 brake booster and date code 9K6 starter motor.
Behind the cars original motor you’ll find an original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission that carries a P9H06B assembly stamping and a correct partial VIN of 19N697820. Turning the engines twist into usable thrust is the cars original 341NF 12-bolt Posi-traction rear end that houses optional G80 3.73 gears and is stamped with a CBU1003G1 assembly date and an I179 casting date. The cars restored chassis and highly accurate suspension have been completely returned to correct factory specifications and include correct spiral shocks, original steel bolts, correct optional N40 power steering and correct optional J52 power disc brakes. All of the cars original chalk marks and decals have been painstakingly reproduced, and the original floor pans are solid and dent free. Exhaust is handled by a correct reproduction system that forgoes mandrel bent tubes in exchange for correct wrinkle bends and exits at the rear of the car in traditional ’69 Z/28 fashion. Not a detail was missed under here as everything has been restored or rebuilt to assembly line standards all the way back to the new stainless fuel tank and stainless fuel lines. At the corners of the car, nicely restored 15 inch silver rally wheels wear slick stainless trim rings and correct finned center caps that are stamped with “Chevrolet Motor Division”. Mounted to those wheels are vintage Goodyear Wide Tread GT E70-15 tubeless tires.
The yellow theme caries over inside the car with a correct GM code 714 yellow houndstooth vinyl interior with high backed bucket seats. The bright yellow buckets are in fantastic shape and combine with a correct optional Z87 deluxe interior package which includes yellow molded door panels, wood grain dash applique and bright pedal trim to elevate the cockpit to a whole new level. In front of the driver, a good looking dash houses beautifully restored gauges, an electric clock and controls for the cars heater above wood grain pieces that include a correct option U63 pushbutton AM radio. Below the dash a correct option D55 center console houses correct option U17 four pack gauges and a completely chrome Hurst short throw shifter in a great looking wood trimmed shift plate. Below the console, correct black carpet is bordered by stainless Fisher Body sill plates, protected by black rubber floor mats and anchors traditional GM seatbelts. At the sides of the seats, bright yellow door panels are decorated with excellent looking reproduction stainless trim and correct chrome “Camaro” emblems. Above the seats, a tight black headliner retains all of its color and features a chrome trimmed dome light and hangs excellent looking shoulder belts. Connecting the driver to the road is a correct wood trimmed steering wheel that features a blue Chevrolet bowtie. Out back, the cars accurately restored trunk has been autographed by Jerry MacNeish and features a new trunk mat, a matching spare tire that still carries its original showroom sticker and correct decals.
Documentation for this car includes: the aforementioned original window stickers, a copy of the cars original bill of sale, a placard from the cars original dealership, a complete owner, restoration receipts, pictures of the car during the restoration and after the restoration, a print out with all of the cars casting numbers and part numbers, an issue of the magazine in which the car was featured on the cover, an additional copy of the magazine article, a Jerry MacNeish report, a Jerry MacNeish certification and 2 owner’s manuals.
