The Subaru Impreza has always been one of those cars that do a great job of representing all things to all people. From 4-cylinder grocery getters to the rugged Outback Sport, scooby fans have always been able to find reliable, modest transportation in the form of compact and mid-size offerings. That said; like a few other generally conservative automakers, Subaru does have a bit of a sporting side. And for roughly 25 years, various forms of “WRX” branded runabouts have built a solid reputation for being some the hottest tuner performance on the market. Speaking of tuning, this factory-fresh sedan, a top-of-the-line WRX STi, mixes new car polished with roughly $23K in drivetrain mods to achieve a level of speed and refinement that most mass-market offerings simply can’t touch. And if you’re looking for a highly enjoyable hobby car that’s not so traditional, it’s a whole lot of kick for not a lot of cash!

Thanks to a warm garage and impeccable maintenance, this low-mileage STi is essentially brand new in every way. The folks at Fuji’s Gunma, Japan manufacturing facility must’ve known people paying well over $30K on a small car expected a different level of fit and finish; and with this striking STi Limited, they certainly delivered. There’s absolutely nothing on the car’s showroom stock body that could be considered anything more than shelf wear. Its glossy Crystal Black Silica 2-stage is smooth enough to appear fresh out of the paint shop. Its Rally-inspired trim is so straight you’d think it’s interwoven behind the body’s hard parts. And overall, this Subaru, backed by a clean, 1-owner CarFax, is a super slick speed machine that mixes great curb appeal with a premium sense of drivability!

In the early ‘90s, factory performance wars finally started heating up again. But this time, instead of Chevy, Ford and MoPar duking it out, the battle involved Japan’s finest. Sure, the Viper made its debut and the Corvette was still around, but those beasts were in a different league; and the price of admission to that league was pretty steep. So, the Japanese automakers identified a niche for affordable performance cars, and the fight commenced. This WRX’s proven EJ257 engine, professionally massaged by Integrity Auto Group Performance of Westminster, Maryland, benefits from quite a few notable upgrades. A beefy Garrett GT Series turbo works with stainless piping, a TiAL 44mm V-Band wastegate and a K&N 3-inch high-flow air filter to spin 402 dyno-proven horsepower into 370 lb./ft. of all-weather torque That turbo is kept in check by a GT-spec stainless header and Spearco STI top-mount intercooler. Fossils flow through a custom IAG fuel system, which utilizes parts from Aeromotive, Auto Meter, Walbro and Injector Dynamics. An AEM MAP sensor combines with zinc-plated hardware, an IAG oil-air separator and a combination of billet and stainless plumbing to ensure everything works well together. Deeper in the cycle, a blueprinted, bored and honed block spins Manley Platinum Pistons and Manley H-beam rods between ARP studs, ACL Race Series bearings and Killer B oil ancillaries. High quality bolt-ons, like a TiAL Q blow off valve, a GrimmSpeed boost solenoid and a stainless TiAL turbine housing, round out the all-star modifications. And everything was pro-tuned using a COBB V3 Accessport.

Park this scooby on a lift and you’ll find a well-preserved undercarriage that’s every bit as nice as the car’s slick profile. At the center of the floors, a factory-spec 6-speed offers full access to big power thanks to a resurfaced flywheel and fresh Advanced Clutch Technology clutch. Naturally, that gearbox feeds Subaru’s much-admired symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which works in conjunction with Vehicle Dynamics Control and Active Torque Vectoring. Handling has always been a central focus for WRX models, and that attention to detail shows in this sedan’s spry high performance suspension. Unlike the car’s engine, that suspension remains in its stock configuration, taking curves well thanks to hydraulic power steering, a quickened 13 to 1 steering ratio and four power-assisted, “STi” branded calipers. Spent gases travel through a stainless pipe to a Vibrant catalytic converter and quad-tip Perrin cat-back exhaust system. And at the corners, monochromatic, “STi” branded wheels twist 245/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Inside the car you’ll find a stylish leather cockpit that’s ready for autocrossing or road tripping. In the middle of the floors, red-trimmed seats center perforated pads inside clean French stitching. In front of those heated thrones, a conservative dash hangs red-lit gauges and a small Driver Information Center over an XM-capable, MP3-compatible stereo and tasteful carbon fiber trim. Below that dash, a red-tinged shifter looks perfect inside a slim console, which features a modified SI knob that controls the car’s level of boost. Beneath that console, like-new carpet, which is protected by “STi” branded sills and red-stitched, “STi” branded mats, remains tight and fade-free. At the edges of that carpet, tapered door panels frame power mirrors, power windows, power door locks and factory Harman Kardon speakers. In front of the driver, a stitched and wrapped steering wheel spins buttons for cruise and audio around metal foot pedals and a small AEM air/fuel ratio gauge. Behind the cockpit, a factory-finished trunk features ample storage space. And naturally, all the amenities and conveniences you’ve come to expect in a modern scootabout are present and accounted for, including a power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and 8-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat.
