If you think the F5 Camaro is just another chintzy, gaudy ‘high school dreamboat’, it’s been a while since you took a good look at GM’s storied pony car. From strip to show, it’s hard to find a better multi-purpose platform than a new Camaro. And when you combine 580 horsepower with a slick 6-speed transmission, Brembo brakes, forged wheels and a rock-solid chassis, you get first class performance that’ll match pretty much anything on the road. This essentially new ZL1 is an 18-mile survivor that hasn’t even had the factory plastic removed from its microfiber-lined performance seats. And if you enjoy going REALLY fast and turning a lot of heads, it’s a modern Detroit marvel that’s just your style!

BODYWORK/TRIM

With mere test miles on its bright digital odometer, this showroom-fresh Chevy is an as-new garage queen that’s assembly line perfect in virtually every way. A sinister coat of Black 2-stage, which is accented by functional splitters and an optional carbon fiber air extractor, shows just how far paint technology has come since the days of multi-colored IROCs. Judging by that pigment’s mirror-like shine, it’s likely the literal minutes of road time this drop-top has seen were executed during sunny, drama-free weather. And the car’s slab-sided body displays precise fit and excellent finish under ancillary hardware that functions well and seals great. Visually, the fifth generation Camaro is one of the most aggressive Chevys ever produced. And when that aggression is combined with GM’s high quality build techniques, it creates one seriously capable muscle car that shows with the finest classics and runs the fastest street warriors!

ENGINE

No car guy worth his salt will dispute the merit of anything with eight cylinders and a Chevrolet badge! This ZL1’s incredible power is supplied by a stout, 6.2 liter LSA V8 that’s based on GM’s award winning Generation IV small block. Exclusive to the ZL1, and Cadillac’s world-beating CTS-V, the LSA utilizes an aluminum block, stainless exhaust manifolds, a low-lift cam, modified heads and 9 psi of Eaton boost to twist 580 horsepower into 556 lb./ft. of earth-moving torque. This impressive mill is an excellent example of why some people believe today is the second golden age of performance. And, dressed in a cool, LSA-exclusive shroud, it shows surprisingly well. Mechanically, there are no leaks or squeaks of any kind, and the car’s engine bay appears just as clean as the day it rolled off GM Canada’s assembly line.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Take a look under this Zeta-based Chevy and you’ll find a slick-shifting Tremec TR6060 6-speed that’s suspended in a proven, road-ready chassis. Found in everything from the Dodge Viper to Saleen Mustangs, that T56-derived gearbox utilizes larger gears to deliver better durability and improved torque capacity. That torque flows to a limited slip rear end that’s fitted with beefy 3.73 gears. That drivetrain plays well with a lowered, Nurburgring-tested suspension, which benefits from Performance Traction Management and GM’s universally loved Magnetic Ride Control. A sweet but equally brutal soundtrack is provided by Chevrolet’s dual-mode exhaust system, technology made popular by the C6 Corvette. Variable-ratio power steering, big Brembo calipers and giant, vented rotors combine with factory ABS and electronic brake distribution to ensure this is the best handling street-focused Camaro to date. And power pounds the pavement via forged aluminum wheels that spin 285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s in front of 305/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s.

INTERIOR

Inside this pristine Camaro you’ll find a Black leather interior that’s been upfitted with Chevrolet’s optional Suede Microfiber Interior Package. The car’s heated, “ZL1” branded seats are supple, supportive and provide 6-way power adjustment for both the driver and front passenger. The dash, which features the same black accents as the car’s red-stitched door panels, hangs traditional, silver-trimmed gauges between alloy pedal covers and a small Heads Up Display. At the center of that dash, a 7-inch MyLink touchscreen, which controls a 9-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system, rides above ZL1-specific accessory gauges and a short, suede-wrapped shifter. Below those gauges, carpet is protected by bright ZL1 sill plates. In front of the driver, a suede-wrapped steering wheel spins buttons for the car’s Bluetooth connectivity, satellite-compatible audio system and standard cruise control around a standard tilt and telescoping column. Behind the passengers, a surprisingly spacious trunk features enough room for a weekend’s worth of luggage. And naturally, all the luxuries you’d expect in a high dollar muscle car are present and accounted for including: navigation, OnStar, power windows, power door locks, an auto-dimming mirror, a rearview camera system, remote keyless entry and a standard theft deterrent system.
