Custom choppers are basically the street rods of the motorcycle world. Great to look at and fun for short cruises, but their usefulness as proper vehicles fades as the trip meter rises. When the road ahead is long, it’s time for a more refined kind of bike – one capable of providing a comfortable ride regardless of the distance. This 2012 Harley Davidson Road King Classic is just that kind of bike. With vintage looks wrapped in a touring package, this Harley doesn’t skimp on visual cues, but instead includes them in a full package ready to fulfill your road trip dreams. With just 4,311 original miles, this brand new Road King is not only a great touring bike but the perfect blank canvas for adding personal touches. If you’re in the market to join the Harley owners club or just want a great addition to your existing collection, this showroom new ’12 Road King Classic is a great option.

The original Road King was introduced in 1994, but its heritage dates back to the 1965 Electra Glide. Stylistically, this translates to timeless good looks. Up front, the vintage vibes start with the fat chrome-edged front fender, which draws the eye back towards the six-gallon fuel tank. Classically shaped and hand-finished, the attractive tank flows perfectly into the two-up leather seat. Harley paint is always impressive and this Road King is no exception. The panels are covered in a glossy coat of white with black pinstripes across the front fender and gas tank. With chrome accenting nearly every surface, the bike has a clean look, sure to age just as well as the overall design.

Built as a cross between a touring bike and a cruising bike, there are plenty of rider-friendly features that make piloting this Road King a pleasant experience. Up front, the Lexan windshield detaches quickly for easy transition between cruising and touring. Below, a nostalgic “hiawatha” headlight burns bright and hearkens back to the Big Twins of the 1960s. The seat offers the right mixture of comfort and support while providing a great view of the simple tank mounted gauges. There is nothing excessive there – just a speedometer and a row of digital warning lights below. Wide set handlebars and full-length footboards offer a comfortable riding position while an adjustable rear suspension allows the rider to select further comfort levels. On either side of the rear fender, lockable injection-molded saddlebags offer plenty of storage for extended travel while continuing the vintage look.

Underneath that attractive body, the Harley Davidson engineers took their time in crafting a rigid frame capable of handling the rigors of extended cruising. At the core is a two-piece stamped and welded steel back bone which serves as the central support for the tubular frame. The front end features a telescopic fork with a 26-degree rake and 170mm trail, offering a smooth stable ride. At the rear, a bolt-on twin-sided swing arm keeps the back end planted while dual air-adjustable shocks absorb the bumps. One of the persistent myths about Harleys is that their stock brakes are less than stellar. This Road King Classic is definitely out to disprove that. Braking is surprisingly crisp thanks to twin 11.81-inch Brembo rotors up front and a single 11.81-inch rotor out back. The frame meets the road through a 17-inch wheel up front and a 16-inch wheel at the rear, both wrapped in Dunlop rubber.

The engine is always the focal point on a Harley and this Road King hosts a 103 cubic inch (1688cc) twin cam in the traditional V-twin configuration. Introduced for the 2012 model year, the 103 utilizes a 3.875 bore, 4.38 stroke, 9.6:1 compression and electronic sequential port fuel injection to make 72rwhp – a comfortable match for this 810 lb cruiser. If you need more, this bone-stock powerplant is a perfect blank canvas to host any of the wide variety of aftermarket speed parts available for this popular V-twin. Breathing through Harley’s innovative 2-1-2 exhaust system, the engine fires immediately and sounds awesome. Behind the 103, a six-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheel through a belt drive. The combination is good for 53mpg on the highway and roughly 34mpg in the city.

With just over 4,000 original miles and all the right options to make cruising a pleasure, this 2012 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic is the perfect bike for anyone looking to hit the road in comfort and style. If there’s a room for Harley in your life, don’t miss the chance to make this super clean Road Glide your own!
