If you want a fast Mustang, there are literally dozens of companies that can do it, including Ford itself. Say you want something a little unusual, but not a fragile one-off tuner car without a warranty and you don’t want to just start ordering parts out of a catalog. Where would you go? How about to the guy who Ford trusts with some of their most important R&D and racing projects Jack Roush.

This 733-mile (yes, you read that correctly) Roush 427R Mustang is arguably the best-looking Roush-modified Mustang available in 2008. Combining the trademark Roush front fascia and rear wing with the factory side skirts results in a clean, trim shape that looks well integrated, but with a unique look all its own. Of course, the Colorado Red (NOT Torch Red) paint doesn’t hurt. This exact car just like this was on the cover of an awful lot of magazines in 2008 and is the only one produced in this color combination. Roush also adds a unique white stripe down the center of the hood, as well as hockey sticks on its flanks that incorporate the 427R logo, and which are distinctly reminiscent of a vintage Boss 302. With only 733 miles, this car is in new condition in every conceivable way, and thanks to Roush’s ministrations, is probably even sharper than a car that simply rolled off the Ford assembly line.

You’ll also note the prominent hood scoop emblazoned with “ROUSHCHARGED” emblems (well get to the Roushcharger in a moment, don’t worry), Roush badges on the front fenders, as well as a unique 427 gas cap out back. The cool front grille is pure Mustang, and the inboard-mounted fog lamps are a nice nod to late-60s Shelby’s. Glass is unmarked all around, and it’s highly unlikely that this car has ever seen weather harsher than a nervous glance. As with many of the immaculately preserved cars we get, the highest praise we can offer on this one is that it is 100% as-delivered.

Now about that Roushcharger. The engine is Fords rugged and powerful 4.6 liter V8 with single overhead camshafts and three valves per cylinder. But the 427R adds an Eaton supercharger from the Stage 3 to the mix (hence the Roushcharger moniker), and the result belts out a pavement-rippling 435 horsepower and an even 400 pounds of torque. Other special elements include the Roush intake and high-flow air filter, billet aluminum caps for the radiator and oil filler, and badges that both identify this as a 427R, with horsepower and torque ratings, as well as the signature of the fellow who built it up in Livonia (Alex Komisarchuk, in case you’re a fan). And, of course, there’s a custom engine computer, since this is Roush’s specialty they already do much of the calibration work for Ford at the OEM level, so adding 100 or so horsepower is a piece of cake.

The transmission is a slick-shifting 5-speed manual, and Ford has finally managed to tame the live rear axle in the Mustang so that it is no longer a liability. Roush replaces the Mustangs stock exhaust with an “off-road” setup that adds a few horsepower and sounds absolutely insane. The upgraded Roush suspension provides for razor sharp steering via upgraded front struts, rear shocks, custom front and rear springs and sway bars, and firmer jounce bumpers. It’s somewhat stiffer than the stock setup, but much more direct. The 427-R goes exactly where you want it to go, reacting quickly and accurately to every steering input. Brakes are discs at all four corners augmented by ABS. Gorgeous chrome plated 18-inch cast aluminum wheels wear Roush-specified 275/40ZR18 Cooper Zeon 2XS tires that provide plenty of grip and a compliant ride.

While many of the interior bits are optional on the 427R, it appears that the original purchaser of this car checked most of the important boxes. The seats are beautifully stitched and incredibly comfortable red and black leather thrones that feature Jack Roush’s signature embroidered on the backrest. The back seats have been upholstered to match, while the rest of the black bits are 100% OEM Ford. Custom white-faced gauges transform the Mustangs instruments, and you get that way cool Jack Roush signature that lights up along with them. A carbon fiber dash trim kit makes the Mustangs interior look vastly more upscale and expensive than it really is. However, the best part of the interior is the Roush Short Throw Shifter. The white cue ball knob and steel shifter arm not only look great, but provide a much more accurate and shorter throw, making shifting perhaps the best part of driving the car. A set of custom floor mats with the 427R logo rounds out the list of interior upgrades.

Documentation includes all the original owners manuals, warranty booklets, maintenance schedules, and tire information guide.

So as more and more companies rush to put out special edition Mustangs, and the ones coming out of the factory start costing some serious money, take another look at this Roush 427R. Less expensive than a Shelby, it shifts better, handles better, looks better, and has more personality, too. Roush has put together an impressive package with the 427-R, with attractive visual upgrades combined with balanced performance from the engine and suspension. And there’s just no question that Roush’s cars will remain at the pinnacle of the Mustang pecking order. Just think of them as the Shelbys of the 21st century. This is your chance to get a virtually new top-of-the-line Roush Mustang that’s loaded with almost every option you could throw at it. Call now!
