The world of Cobra roadsters is much like the world of street rods: there are nice cars and then there are cars that take things to a whole new level. That means Cobra enthusiasts don’t have to look very hard to find a great variety of aftermarket support, and that makes it pretty easy to build a roadster any way they like it. The problem then becomes the amount of time and money that such a massive undertaking requires. After spending years writing check after check to shop after shop, the enthusiast finally gets to enjoy a car that, by that point in time, they might not even want. Fortunately, there is a better solution! Why not let your friends at RK Motors Charlotte sell you a top-notch custom like this killer Superformance MKIII for half the price, and a fraction of the time, of building it yourself?

HISTORY/APPEARANCE

The pros at Livonia, Michigan’s Roush Performance have gained quite a reputation for assembling serious performance machines. In addition to specializing in choice Mustang builds, they’re also well-known for first class powerplants: like the one featured in the rad track terror we just posted. This roadster, created to exhibit exactly how well Roush can move a Superformance Cobra, spent the first year of its life displayed at venues like Barrett-Jackson auctions and the Charlotte Auto Fair.

Now, to put “how well” in to context you have to remember that Superformance roadsters are the only Shelby licensed replica of the original 1965 Cobra. So, imagine taking a built-to-spec fiberglass Shelby and throwing in 50 years of advanced performance hardware to create a legendary classic that features out-of-this-world driving dynamics. Those dynamics begin with high quality, hand-laminated resin, which hardens into a rock-solid fuselage. Those stiffly reinforced panels display the smooth surfaces and typically tight gaps we’ve come to expect from top tier builds. Those excellent aesthetics found glossy Indigo Blue Metallic 2-stage under muted Metallic Charcoal racing stripes. And the result is a timeless combination of killer style and serious performance that manifests as a virtually irresistible curve carver!

Detailing is crucial on a replica because that’s where a lot of cars start to disappoint. Not surprisingly, this Superformance beast nails all the right visuals! At the front of the car, a 3M-coated nose hangs a modern “Superformance” badge between chrome-trimmed headlights, mesh grilles, clear parking lamps and polished quick lifts. A small hood anchors a riveted scoop in front of locking latches, polished wipers and a decaled windscreen that’s dressed in tinted visors and “COBRA” branded wings. At the sides of the car, polished heat extractors join 3M-coated rockers to split the difference between coated pipes traditional fender emblems and a polished, bullet-style mirror. And at the back of the car, a polished roll bar and familiar, Monza-style fuel filler lead the eye to a chrome tag light, chrome-trimmed tail lamps, a locking trunk handle and two more polished quick lifts.

ENGINE

This roadster’s signage accurately advertises 427 cubic inches of American muscle. What it fails to convey is: instead of some romantic relic from a bygone era, would-be challengers are facing a fresh Roush Performance 427 IR small block that twists a heady 550 horsepower into 535 lb./ft. of tire-killing torque! Built from the ground up as your ticket to major acceleration and insane speed, this stout mill is founded on an iron block, a steel crank, a roller cam, H-beam connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. At the top of the surly engine, modern electronic fuel injection seats eight polished stacks under eight K&N filters. Those stacks feed aluminum, CNC-ported heads, which hide tough hydraulic roller lifters under polished K&N breathers and trick Roush valve covers. Fire is provided by an MSD Blaster coil, which is connected to an MSD Pro-Billet distributor and loomed Ford Racing plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a screened radiator, which utilizes corrugated hoses to circulate water past dual electric puller fans and a polished expansion tank. Ceramic-coated headers evacuate spent gases into the aforementioned side-pipes. And at the front of the block, pliable V-belts spin a fresh alternator opposite modern power steering. Aesthetically, the hot engine, installed by Mooresville, North Carolina’s Olthoff Racing, looks right at home in the car’s aluminum bay. And well-planned details, like Roush brackets and quality Earl’s fluid lines, are both functional and appealing.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

One of the best things about buying any high quality replica is the modern hardware underneath. Fully sorted and ready to roll, this roadster’s Superformance heavy wall Jig-welded frame and fully independent suspension are poised to challenge the toughest turns you can find! At the center of those bones, a rugged Tremec 5-speed twists torque to a tough Dana third member, which spins a limited-slip differential around big, 3.46 gears. Turns come courtesy of power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Solid stops are provided by four power-assisted discs. Torque meets the tarmac through polished, spindle-mount wheels, which twist 275/40ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sports in front of 335/35ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sports. And details like painted floors and a deep-sump oil pan round out an otherwise impressive build.

INTERIOR

Cobra interiors have always been stylish and simple, and one look inside this roadster reveals just how serious the car’s aspirations are when it comes to being driver-focused. Buff bucket seats stretch tight leather hides under Simpson 5-point safety harnesses. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash hangs a full array of Smiths gauges beside a locking glovebox. At the sides of that dash, lightweight doors found polished poppers behind simple panels. Below those doors, clean carpet centers a booted e-brake and polished shifter between a polished fire extinguisher and colorful Superformance floor mats. The driver feels the asphalt through a polished steering wheel, which twists a leather-wrapped rim. And the passenger stows cargo in a fully finished trunk.
