1977-1981 Pontiac Trans Ams have been on an upward trajectory since 2007, and are picking up steam annually! If you grew up in the mid to late 70’s, these cars are the dream machines that everyone talked about, wanted and drooled over. The generation that loves these cars has been moving into the collector car hobby over the last five years and will continue to do so for the next twenty. This one owner, pristine, low mileage 1978 Trans Am Special Edition is the exact car we get calls about on a regular basis here at RK Motors Charlotte. The conversation usually goes something like this:

Customer: “I see you had a 30,000 original 1977 Pontiac Trans Am SE for sale and it’s sold ($60,000.00). Do you have any more coming in?”

RK Motors Charlotte: “Well, it’s pretty difficult to find documented, numbers matching, super low mile, properly stored, one owner black Trans Am Special Editions and we’ve only seen like six in the last five years, but keep an eye on our website and if we get one, you will see it pop up there and get snatched up just as quickly as this one, so be ready to pounce.”

Are you ready to pounce?

All original from its Hurst T-tops down to its factory exhaust and white letter tires, this completely documented 16,800 mile car has been stored in a climate controlled facility all of its life and has all the right stuff you have been looking for.

Since the cars original build sheet hasn’t been removed from its factory location, I’ll go ahead and decode the cowl tag and provide a breakdown of the car’s options as they’re listed by the Pontiac Historical Society documents included with the sale.

Assembled at GM’s Norwood Ohio manufacturing facility in December of 1977, this pristine Special Edition Trans Am was delivered to Hansord Pontiac Company in Minneapolis Minnesota and purchased on January 10th 1978 by the same dedicated owner that would keep it for close to 33 years. Today, the car presents as practically brand new with a spectacular coat of original GM code 19 Starlight Black paint that covers 100% original body panels which are as solid and straight as the day they left the showroom floor. On top of the cool black paint, a set of Special Edition exclusive full outlining stripes complement an awesome Special Edition exclusive gold and matte gold trimmed screaming chicken hood decal that is one of the most iconic automotive brandings in history.

Despite minimum brightwork, Special Edition Trans Ams were highly decorated cars that brought new meaning to the word ‘details’. Up front, a straight and glossy urethane front bumper houses Special Edition Trans Am specific gold headlight inserts that sit on either side of a traditional red Pontiac arrow head emblem to provide Pontiacs familiar dual grille, quad headlight look. Behind that front bumper, the cars great looking “T/A-6.6” branded shaker hood sits in front of a pristine original Soft Ray tinted windshield that is bordered by correct option B77 black molding. Behind that windshield, Y82 Special Edition exclusive tinted Hurst T-tops sit above chrome GM door handles with black inserts and Special Edition exclusive gold B-pillar decals. On the front fenders, Special Edition exclusive German style “Trans Am” decals sit below traditional Pontiac fender vents and stainless trim spears that run from the front wheel openings to the rear wheel openings. At the back of the car, correct option B89 black backlight molding borders original backlight glass and a correct black tail lamp panel houses showroom fresh tail lights. Above those tail lights, a large German style “Trans Am” decal occupies the car’s rear spoiler, and below those tail lights you’ll find an original “Hansord” dealership decal, an original “Ziebart” rustproofing decal (which we also have the paperwork for) and correct Firebird exclusive stainless exhaust tips.

Under the hood you’ll find this Trans Ams all original 6.6 liter W72 V8 which was the largest muscle car engine you could buy in 1978. Thanks to government mandated emissions standards, performance had almost been legislated out of existence, and that left the Trans Am suffering a bit of an identity crisis. By utilizing smaller “6X” heads from a 350 and a revised camshaft, the W72 created higher compression and successfully reversed almost a decade of declining horsepower numbers. At the top of the motor, an original Rochester 4 barrel carburetor sits under the cars awesome shaker scoop. Below that carburetor, original GM corporate blue paint coats the entire block and original exhaust manifolds send exhaust into a high performance factory exhaust system. All the hard parts around the motor, from the belt driven accessories to the brake booster and air conditioning hanging on the fire wall are factory original; and as expected tags, markings and stamps are just where they should be from the date coded core support to the gold painted cowl tag. The car’s clean engine bay and hood are covered in a nice coat of factory satin black and there’s fresh belts, fresh hoses and even a new battery.

At the bottom of this Trans Am, a solid and clean all original undercarriage tells the story of years of excellent maintenance and low miles. The straight floor pans still display most of their mild factory undercoating and the cars satin black suspension still retains most of its factory shine. Behind the motor, an original Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed automatic transmission sends power to the cars original 10 bolt rear end which still retains its original metal maintenance tag. The original Trans Am suspension, which includes power steering, thicker sway bars, better shocks and stiffer springs combines with power front disc brakes and rear drums to provide quick stops and great handling. The car even still carries its ORIGINAL power boosting dual exhaust system which barks out a deep vintage sound that most modern Flowmaster and Dynomax mufflers simply can’t duplicate. All of the cars hardware and bushings appear to be in good shape and out back, a new stainless fuel tank is solid and leak free. At the corners, original aluminum Pontiac snow flake wheels wear the cars ORIGINAL 225/70 Uniroyal White Letter tires and are adorned with Special Edition exclusive gold paint and ‘gold bird’ center caps.

Open this Trans Ams massive black doors and you’ll find the cars original optional velour interior that sports Special Edition exclusive gold trim. The cars original seats are firm, crisp and look every bit as nice and rich as their velour name implies. Below the seats, the cars black carpet which has been carefully protected by factory rubber floor mats, displays no fading or unraveling at all. Between the seats a silver trimmed black console houses a storage bin behind the cars automatic shifter, and above the seats, a stain free headliner is stretched tight around the cars Hurst T-tops. In front of the driver, an excellent looking engine turned gold dash houses crystal clear gauges above controls for heat and air conditioning and the cars original Delco-GM AM/FM stereo. At the sides of the seats, pitch black door panels feature pristine stainless and chrome handles for both the doors and windows. Connecting the driver to the road is a correct gold steering wheel with a black rim and a correct gold screaming chicken horn button that perfectly matches the cars correct gold screaming chicken shift knob. Out back, the cars pristine trunk is still labeled with all of its original decals and still carries its original courtesy lamp and space saver spare tire.

Like all of our investment grade cars, this Trans Am comes with extensive documentation. We have the cars original dealer paperwork from Hansord Pontiac, the cars original 10 day permit and title, the cars original owner’s manual and warranty booklets, research from the Pontiac Historical Society, maintenance receipts that include the Ziebart paperwork and other original prep work performed, and of course, the original build sheet which is still in its rightful place inside the car.

NOW is the time to buy a correct, low mileage, investment grade Trans Am to show and enjoy for years to come. And here’s a guarantee: if you don’t, someone else will and you will be chasing a value curve heading straight upwards for the next 20 years.
