Look up the definition of muscle car and the second generation Chevelle is almost always directly referenced. Offered in trim levels ranging from stripped economy champ to luxury pavement pounder, Chevrolet produced Chevelle’s capable of satisfying the needs of nearly every buyer and every wallet. That legacy of universal appeal has continued across the last forty years, giving fans and aficionados the parts and inspiration to create their own unique hot rods. Take this ’71 Super Sport for example. Updated with modern drivetrain components during its extensive frame off restoration, this tastefully modified Chevy turns a traditionally appealing platform into an off-the-charts super star. If you’re ready to hit the streets in a head-turning muscle car, have a closer look at this stunning Chevelle!

Before we take a close look at this Chevelle, let’s first decode the VIN:
VIN: 136671BXXXXXX
1: Chevrolet
3: Chevelle
6: 8-Cylinder engine
67: 2-door convertible coupe
1: 1971
B: Baltimore
XXXXXX: Production sequence number

Originally leaving the Baltimore factory in Classic Copper, today it sits in a fresh coat of Mulsanne Blue with white stripes for a crisp look. Actually fresh is a great way of describing this entire car, as the vehicle has less than 400 miles driven on it since its extensive frame off restoration. The result is an arrow straight body which displays no waves or imperfections, super reflective paint which is flat enough to take a self-portrait in, and an overall stunning muscle car that, no matter how many times you see it, just never gets old.

Aesthetically, many enthusiasts believe the ’71 Chevelle introduced a host of excellent refinements which transformed the ‘good’ design of the ’70 Chevelle into something ‘great’. At the front of the car, a black, Super Sport exclusive grille centers a pristine, white inlayed “SS” emblem between correct T3 headlights, clear, chrome trimmed parking lights and a showroom fresh body-width chrome bumper. Behind that grille, an aggressive hood is complete with correct stainless hood pins and is branded with “LSX” scripts. The hood leads the eye toward correct soft ray tinted glass that is capped by a gorgeous white top and framed by pristine stainless trim. At the bottom of that like-new glass, body-matched sport mirrors and traditional chrome GM door handles hang above new stainless wheel well trim; and prominent “SS” fender emblems stand out like skid marks on a sun bleached blacktop. At the back of the car, a stylish, body-width chrome bumper integrates familiar round Chevrolet tail lights at the sides of a fourth white inlayed “SS” emblem. And a fresh “Chevelle by Chevrolet” with another LSX trunk emblem perfectly complements stainless exhaust tips.

In 1971, the biggest and baddest motor you could shove between the fenders of an all steel Chevrolet passenger car was the mighty LS5 454 V8. For this Chevelle, it was never a 454, so the build team opted to transplant a bullet-proof LS1 coming off a recent freshening where all LSX internals were used in the build. Pop the hood and you’ll be greeted by a black engine bay that absolutely pops thanks to bright orange valve covers, a Chevy orange block, and bright orange Corvette lettering on this historic appearing valve covers. The fresh modern engine provides plenty of reliable power, and thanks to the Vintage Air conditioning and power steering, this Chevelle is an amazing place to log miles from with the top up or down. In front of the engine is an aluminum radiator with dual electric fans capable of keeping the potent engine cool regardless of how bad traffic gets.

Under the Chevelle is just as impressive as the rest of the build. Take a glance and you’ll see that bolted to the potent LS1 is a hydraulic clutch and a Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission that sends plenty of power down the driveshaft to a 12-bolt equipped with 4.10 posi differential. The chassis and suspension are just the way they left the factory except for the fact the underside has been painted to match the exterior. The only addition to the suspension was the front and rear anti-sway bars that were added during the extensive frame-off build. Spent gasses enter the true dual exhausts that run the length of the underside and exits out chrome tips to make a muscle car era worthy sound. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors. In front of those brakes 18” and 20” Billet Specialties rims have been wrapped in Sumitomo rubber.

Featuring a host of fresh 1971 interior components, this coupe’s crisp, white cockpit is both inviting and unique. Its slick bucket and bench combo is firm to the touch and shows no signs of wear at all. In front of those seats, a straight and crack-free dash hangs Classic Instruments gauges and a retro stereo that blasts out tunes through 180w speakers. Below that dash, a stainless-trimmed console anchors a the shifter for the 6-speed and features the gear pattern. On the floor you will find clean blue carpet and at the sides of that carpet, pick-free door panels center spotless stainless trim and prerequisite “SS” emblems on bright chrome handles and white armrests. In front of the driver, a three-spoke steering wheel spins around a famous chevy bowtie centerpiece.

With its incredible motor, lust-worthy body and fully sorted chassis, this Chevelle is the very definition of muscle car. Its professional build, which combines stunning design with no-limits performance, represents first class showmanship at its very finest. If you’re in the market for a top notch classic that’ll win trophies and literally own the street, this Chevy is your kind of car!
