Even though the Pontiac GTO may have inspired the muscle car era, there we’re plenty of other entrants that were just as cool and just as notable. One such participant, Oldsmobile’s sophisticated 442, consistently serves as the foundation for some of the nicest MoTown metal we sell. And when you take a close look at an example like this fully documented hardtop, you’ll understand exactly why. Wrapping correct blue and black aesthetics around a vaunted 455/4-speed drivetrain, this Olds is the stuff of legend!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Assembled in Lansing, Michigan during the fifth week of April, 1971, this awesome Oldsmobile is an impeccably maintained classic that wraps a full restoration in correct Viking Blue 2-stage and bright white decals. At the front of the car’s clean, boxy lines, a 442-specific grille centers monochromatic “442” lettering between stainless-trimmed headlights, a monochromatic rocket emblem and a bright chrome bumper that’s finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a W25 Fresh Air Hood anchors chrome lanyards in front of a chip-free greenhouse that’s framed in straight stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, traditional GM handles and color-keyed sport mirrors perfectly complement clean marker lamps, dent-free wheel rings and slick “442” fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a “442” branded decklid hangs a large wing above a second chrome bumper, silver-trimmed taillights and correct, trumpeted exhaust tips.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN

It’s not immediately apparent why this Olds’s body carries so much sizzle; that is, until you see what’s under its hood. Twist the locks, fling the resin and you’ll find 455 cubic inches of Rocket V8 that hang a correct 396021F casting number over a matching partial VIN. That hot big block fronts a tough Muncie 4-speed, which hangs a correct 3925661 casting number above a Muncie (P) M20 (A) assembled on April (D) 21st (21), 1971 (1) build stamp. That proven transmission sends power to a stout 10-bolt axle, which hides a limited-slip differential under a cool W27 inspection cover. That smooth driveline rides a familiar heavy-duty suspension, which, along with the car’s chassis, was thoroughly stripped, painted and detailed during the body-off reboot. Solid stops are provided by correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of correct power steering. At the center of the floors, a Mandrel-bent exhaust system funnels spent gases through an X-shaped crossover and Pypes Street Pro mufflers. And everything rolls on Oldsmobile Super Stock IIIs, which spin G70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Treads around rocket-branded center caps.

INTERIOR

Inside this impressive coupe, you’ll find a correct Black interior that, in the realm of performance-focused muscle cars, is both classy and upscale. At the center of the cockpit, stainless-trimmed seats frame a correct console that’s centered on a traditional Hurst shifter. In front of those thrones, a wood-trimmed dash hangs correct Rally Pack telemetry above a correct stereo. And in front of the driver, a correct Sport Steering Wheel laps a correct tilting column.

PROVENANCE

In addition to an original Build Sheet that confirms this handsome Olds’s status as a real-deal 442, a simple decode of the car’s VIN and Cowl Tag confirms the accuracy of its restoration.
