Produced on February 11th of 1971 and owned by a series of Mustang fanatics who ensured years of factory authenticity and spectacular performance, this super cool Mach 1 is the product of a decade long collection of original and NOS parts, a two year restoration and a concours level detail. When the time came for its frame-off rejuvenation, the car’s solid but tired body was striped to bare metal, massaged into a virtually flawless canvas and covered in a glossy coat of authentic Ford code 3 Bright Red Deltron. Once that smooth paint was buffed to a brilliant shine, a brutal combination of trademark satin black hood and decklid paint and sinister Mach 1 side stripes was added for good measure. And today, this badass pony car sits as a classic collection of straight and flat body panels, perfectly ridged character lines, and narrow panel gaps which create one show stopping award winner!

For the 1971 model year former GM executive Bunkie Knudson lead Ford’s product design and he wanted to take the Mustang into a bigger, heavier and more luxurious playing field. The idea was to cash in on the burgeoning large luxury coupe market; and not only did the Mustang grow, it also received styling cues which exaggerated both its length and weight. At the front of the car prominent, chrome trimmed parking lights and inset, crystal clear headlights combine with an angled chin spoiler and ridged front fenders to provide a fierce, aggressive look. Inside those parking lights a chrome Mustang emblem, which features a familiar galloping horse and red, white and blue vertical inlays, is centered next to a familiar AACA badge; and outside those parking lights, pristine stainless trim perfectly contrasts a black, body-width grille and a Bright Red bumper. Top dead center on the hood you’ll find clean “351 Ram Air” scripts which look perfectly natural next to stainless twist latches. And sprinkled down the fuselage you’ll find stainless wheel lips, excellent looking flush-fit door handles, fresh stainless drip rails and body-matched racing mirrors which add detail to an otherwise monochromatic profile. At the top of the car factory-tint glass, which is complete with an electric rear window defogger, sits inside bright stainless borders and a virtually flat SportsRoof roofline. And at the back of the car, a traditional black valence hangs showroom fresh tail lights between a satin finished fuel filler, a show worthy chrome bumper and a satin back roll pan.

Fortunately, this award winning pony car is a lot more than just a pretty body. Under its blacked-out hood, you’ll find an original 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 which has been completely rebuilt to its correct factory specifications. As one of the most popular pony car mills ever created, Ford’s venerable 351C M-code utilizes high performance heads and smooth hydraulic lifters to turn stout 10.7 to 1 compression into a solid 285 horsepower! At the top of the engine, a correct Autolite 4-barrel carburetor sits under a fully functional ram air induction system which draws fresh air from the car’s silver detailed hood. Below that carburetor, “Powered By Ford” branded valve covers hang at the sides of an original cast iron intake which holds a correct Autolite coil next to a traditional points distributor and fresh Radio Resistance plug wires. And below those plug wires, fully restored exhaust manifolds funnel spent gases into high performance true dual pipes while a correctly decaled radiator cycles water through Autolite hoses and reproduction clamps. As you can see, the car’s spotless engine bay has been properly sprayed in a smooth coat of satin black paint. All its correct ancillary components, from the fresh power brake booster and Autolite voltage regulator to the correctly tagged AC compressor and gray shock tower braces are present and accounted for. And the road-ready small block is fast, potent and runs every bit as good as its brilliant Ford Blue paint suggests!

Naturally, the bottom of this clean Ford has been restored to the same concours standards as its exterior and engine compartment. Behind the motor, an original wide ratio 4-speed transmission spins a correctly marked driveshaft and a durable Ford 9 inch rear end which appears to have original 3.25 gears. Holding that drivetrain off the ground is a correctly restored independent front and solid axle rear suspension which consists of like-new OEM-grade equipment and a fresh set of Motorcraft shocks. Above that suspension, satin black floor pans appear new, show little to no weathering and wear a mild layer of undercoating, just as the car would have left the factory. At the ends of that suspension, optional power steering combines with optional power front disc and rear drum brakes, and a correctly over sprayed gas tank to make turning, stopping and accelerating an absolute cinch. In the middle of the floors, a fresh true dual exhaust system sends roasted dinosaurs from restored manifolds to an H-pipe crossover and great sounding turbo mufflers. And at the edge of the floors, power flows to the pavement through familiar 15 inch Magnum 500 wheels which spin meaty F60-15 Firestone Wide Oval 60s around galloping horse center caps.

Inside this red rocket, a correct black Vermillion Clarion Knit vinyl interior features fresh Corinthian buckets seats and a roster of color-keyed accents which blend seamlessly with the car’s awesome exterior paint. Everything from the seat foams and red seat covers to the black carpet and red rubber floor mats appears to have been replaced during the restoration. The dash is loaded with rebuilt gauges, which include a factory clock, and features wood grain trim that’s as vivid and bright as the day the car rolled into the showroom. A correct AM radio, which is complete with a factory 8-track player, rides between well integrated accessory gauges, controls for the car’s heat and air conditioning and a chrome Hurst shifter. And an optional Rim Blow steering wheel combines with a red headliner, chrome accessory knobs and red, wood trimmed door panels to provide a fresh and appealing driving environment. Behind the interior, a completely restored trunk features a correct mat, correct lid decals a space saver spare and a cool pass through panel which works in conjunction with a sport deck rear seat to make this pony capable of hauling more than ass. And, like most first generation Mustangs, this Mach 1’s design and detailing is impressive proof that Ford definitely had some of the best interior designers in the business.
