If you grew up around cars, “LS6” was probably one of those terms that, alongside “Hemi” and “Super Cobra Jet” signified something special long before you could properly define it. Thankfully, the significance of those terms only grows with education, making cars like this numbers-matching LS6-equipped 1970 Chevelle SS all the more desirable. With just 18,098 original miles on the clock and 100% original sheet metal all around, this A-body is the beneficiary of an extensive frame off restoration which utilized NOS parts exclusively to return this legend to its former factory glory. Backed by a loyal Muncie M22 4-speed and all the important options such as power steering and power front disc brakes, it’s obvious the original buyer knew exactly what boxes to check on the Special Product Order form. If you’re ready to add one of the most sought after muscle cars in the world to your collection, this awesome LS6 Chevelle will pay you back time and time again.

Assembled in Baltimore, Maryland and shipped to Aero Chevrolet in Alexandria Virginia, this big block Chevelle got off to a rough start. Repossessed by GMAC no less than twice by June of 1974, it finally found a stable home in Chilhowie, Virginia where it spent five years tucked away from the world. By 2001, the car had traded hands a few times but still showed just 17,987 miles on the odometer. In 2009, it underwent an extensive frame off restoration during which no expense was spared to restore every square inch of its sculpted metal to better-than-new condition. After the car was completely stripped, its body was massaged into a laser straight profile and prepped for a correct coat of GM code 48 Forest Green. Once that glossy urethane dried, the slick green body was appropriately battle dressed in correct GM code 10 Classic White rally stripes and sealed in a glossy, durable clear coat shell. Fitment is better than factory and the car simply doesn’t have a bad angle.

That rich green paint works in harmony with tastefully designed trim pieces to create one of the most well-received Chevrolets on record. At the front of the car, a black, Super Sport specific split grille hangs pristine “Chevelle” and “SS” emblems between a body-width chrome bumper, correct stainless trimmed T3 headlights and clear, square parking lights. Above that grille, correct stainless hood pins secure a functional ZL2 cowl induction hood that is complete with correct chrome “Cowl Induction” scripts while like-new soft ray tinted glass occupies the space between the roofline and the full ensemble of pristine stainless trim. At the sides of the car, a correct chrome driver’s side mirror perfectly complements new stainless wheel well moldings and traditional chrome GM door handles while white “SS” emblems with red “454” inlays give the car an aggressive, race-ready appearance. At the back of the car, a pristine body-width bumper frames a fresh black Super Sport insert which is centered between crystal clear tail lights; and a fresh “Chevelle by Chevrolet” trunk emblem perfectly complements correct stainless exhaust tips.

Between the Forest Green fenders, you’ll find the original LS6 454 V8 rebuilt to factory specifications. Rated at 450 horsepower by General Motors, these mighty big blocks were the king of the A-body option list in 1970. The block itself is a proper 3963512 casting with an April 3, 1970 build date and a correct CRV suffix code. Naturally, the engine has all the correct factory pieces including a date-coded Holley carburetor that sits atop a Winter aluminum intake which features a Chevrolet Orange thermostat housing that matches the spotless Chevrolet Orange engine block. A new coil and distributor cap send spark through AC Delco wires across a set of factory correct chrome valve covers. New hoses with appropriate tower clamps and new belts run to accessories which include a new correctly marked master cylinder and brake booster, a correct radiator with the appropriate warning decal on its upper support, a correct coolant overflow tank and a reproduction Delco battery. At the front, an alternator, power steering pump, smog pump and fan all spin off engine power. Breathing through gray factory cast iron exhaust manifolds, the car starts immediately and produces a muffled rumbled that merely hints at the car’s legendary performance.

The chassis of this car has been restored to the highest standards. Sprayed in original GM satin black and featuring all of the correct markings, the undercarriage matches the high quality paint and body work well. Behind that mighty LS6 is the original Muncie M22 rock crusher, wearing a 3925661 stamping on the main case with a matching 10B178277 partial VIN and P0D10C (April 10, 1970) Muncie stamping. Power flows from the M22 to the original 12-bolt rear end packed with street-friendly 3.31 gears. The F41 suspension has been faithfully restored down to the boxed lower control arms and upgraded front and rear sway bars. An OEM-style exhaust system, complete with resonators, runs from the gray GM manifolds to stainless tips below the rear bumper while fresh fuel lines carry fuel from the fresh fuel tank to the Holley carburetor. As mentioned, steering is power assisted as is the braking system which utilizes disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. Connecting this Chevelle to the pavement is four new Goodyear Polyglas G70-14 tires mounted on 14 inch Super Sport rims with chrome trim rings and SS center caps for a completely authentic look.

The interior is black vinyl, which looks great against the Forest Green paint. Despite the car’s low mileage, the interior was completely restored during the restoration several years ago, including the seats, door panels, and headliner. A correct U14 instrument cluster fills the dash, including the optional tachometer that sits alongside a gas gauge, voltmeter, speedometer, temperature gauge and electric clock. A two-spoke SS-badged steering wheel connects the driver to the car through a tilt steering column while a chrome Muncie-branded shifter with a round black shift knob offers control of the M22 just below the floors. Black carpets offer the correct weave, and are protected by a set of black rubber mats. The headliner is taut and wrinkle-free, showing no signs of age or incorrect storage. In the trunk there’s a correct mat and a matching wheel, along with a complete jack assembly.

Documentation is exactly what you’d hope for with a car of this caliber. There are two original build sheets, a timeline of the car’s history and three pages of notes that break down most of the casting numbers and date codes found throughout the car. Also included is a stack of receipts, pictures, a CD and a VHS which, when combined, do a great job at underscoring what a high quality restoration the car underwent. This is a well-documented car built to be shown at the highest levels.

Overall, this numbers matching A-body is the total package. With the king-of-the-mountain LS6, legendary rock crusher four-speed and every option that allowed these cars to develop such stellar reputations, this was a bragging rights car in its day and perhaps even more so now. With just 18,089 original miles and 100% original sheet metal, investment grade Chevelles simply don’t get much better. If you’re ready for some fresh firepower in your automotive arsenal, don’t miss the chance to take home this awesome 1970 Chevelle SS LS6.
