Over the past few years we’ve sold some killer Motor City cruisers, but this 1970 Wildcat has to be one of the coolest! Sporting an original 455/3-speed drivetrain, this awesome hardtop combines the stump pulling torque of its GS brethren with the kind of old school Detroit comfort that made Buick a household name. Today, thanks to a high-quality, body-off restoration, the car is not only a reliable and exceptionally roomy place to spend the summer sightseeing, it’s also a hot piece of vintage Americana that will be welcome at virtually any car show in any town. If you’re looking for a solid classic that’s stylish, powerful and has a rich history, here’s your ticket to good times and great memories!

BODY

Few new-age Buick buyers would ever dream of their coveted tri-shield adorning an aggressive design like this. Fewer still would ever dream of accenting that aggressive design with a sizzling coat of Fire Red 2-stage. But that’s exactly what a previous owner of this Wildcat did during a detailed, ground-up restoration. And today, thanks to good caretaking, the car’s excellent appearance is a largely flaw-free celebration of bold American luxury.

Documented as a “show car”, this Buick is believed to be a loaded dealer demo that was used to showcase all the Wildcat’s various options for the 1970 model year. At the front of the car’s body, a chrome fascia hangs textured grilles, a sporty “Wildcat” script and a prominent tri-shield emblem between divided parking lamps and four T3 headlights. A whittled sweepspear profile integrates clean cornering lamps, small louvers and two more “Wildcat” scripts beside tight wheel frames, optional door guards and polished rocker guards. At the top of the car, a “B U I C K” branded hood leads the eye to a stainless-trimmed greenhouse, which founds tight vinyl behind classy Buick mirrors and traditional GM door handles. And out back, segmented taillights illuminate a broad, tri-shield-branded bumper, which reflects a “Wildcat” branded decklid.

DRIVETRAIN

1970 was a bittersweet year because it sandwiched the final run of Wildcat production with the debut of Buick’s legendary 455 cubic inch V8. The 370 horsepower 455 hiding beneath this final-year Wildcat’s bonnet appears to be an original piece, displaying a correct 1231738 casting number behind a matching 100338 partial VIN. That original engine spins a correct GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed, which hangs a matching 100338 partial VIN in front of a correct, high performance axle. Under that driveline, factory power steering leads a correct, Heavy Duty Suspension. Naturally, stops are handled by Buick’s signature power-assisted drums. Spent gases flow from cast iron manifolds to OEM-style plumbing that’s complete with two turbo mufflers and two small resonators. And at the corners of the car, polished Buick Rallys spin 225/75R15 American Classic whitewalls around snazzy Wildcat center caps.

INTERIOR

Climb inside this timeless hardtop and you’ll find a deep vinyl interior that’s both functional and appealing. Covered in conservative Black surfaces, the car’s bench and deluxe bucket seats are firm, comfortable and provide spacious seating for at least five. In front of those seats, a tall dash hangs factory telemetry between a pushbutton radio and factory air conditioning. At the sides of that dash, stainless-trimmed door panels front factory power windows and factory power door locks. At the bottom of those panels, fade-free carpet floats an ornate console and color-keyed floor mats beneath a factory 8-track player. In front of the driver, a tilt steering column spins a Buick-branded wheel around factory cruise control. And behind the passengers, a gigantic trunk features enough room to swallow anything short of a full-size refrigerator.
