Ever have one of those moments when you find a rare classic with a price that seems too good to be true? The ‘coolest of the cool’ that’s survived almost 50 years of vehicle downsizing, fuel thirsty gearheads and stoplight fisticuffs? Well, you don’t have to worry about getting pinched back to reality this time because this killer Plymouth Sport Satellite is a fully documented, national award winning muscle car that’s comfortable on either the strip or the show field! Not only is this awesome drop-top a fully restored cruiser that’s been in one family for almost 43 years, it also wears 100% original sheet metal, features an original 383-lead powertrain and sports a highly accurate blue on white color combination. When you take a close look at this award winning Satellite convertible it seems only fitting that the car’s entire 43 year existence was spent in the hands of one caring family. Purchased new by Jay O’Dell of Annapolis, Maryland, this fierce Mopar ragtop was, like many family jewels, passed to a son as a cherished keepsake. And, in early 2008, that son shipped its solid body to Champion Auto Body in Pasadena, Maryland for a professional, frame-off restoration. Now, when you’re restoring a classic of this caliber to the level you see here, you have to start with a clean, unmolested body so you retain as much authentic factory fresh feel as possible. And accordingly, this Plymouth’s thorough rebirth began with Champion’s pros sanding all of its original, rust-free panels to an even, exceptional surface. Once the stage was set for paint, a thick coat of primer was sprayed on, allowed days to cure, and worked free of any defects that might prevent a better-than-showroom finish. And when that primer was completely smooth, an impressive coat of correct Chrysler code B5 Blue Fire urethane was carefully sealed in a tough and glossy clearcoat shell. The result is one stunningly straight showpiece that has no gremlins, suffers no thin spots and displays a level of fit and finish that is worlds above a factory assembled car.

Thanks to lessons learned in both packaging and branding, Plymouth outfitted their hottest 1969 mid-size with a number of fresh styling cues that served to better differentiate the car from its more plebian Belvedere siblings. At the front of this Sport’s long blue body, a stainless “Sport Satellite” branded grille hangs a traditional red-trimmed centerpiece and a small AACA Senior National First Prize badge between a traditional “PLYMOUTH” hood script, four halogen headlights and a bright chrome bumper. Behind that “PLYMOUTH” script, a subtle mayflower badge and correct turn signal indicators lead the eye to like-new glass that’s framed by well-maintained stainless trim, cleared by mirrored windshield wipers and capped by a white vinyl top. At the sides of that stainless, dent-free rocker mouldings combine with like-new wheel well trim to anchor “Sport Satellite” fender emblems between traditional chrome door handles and what appear to be original side mirrors. And at the back of the car’s body, “Sport Satellite” branded pot metal trunk trim aligns perfectly between clear factory taillights, a second small “PLYMOUTH” script and a second chrome bumper.

Hoist this awesome Mopar’s hood and you’ll find an original 383 cubic inch Super Commando V8 which creates 330 horsepower and wears a familiar 2468130 casting number above a correct 238199 partial VIN. More popular than Chrysler’s famed HEMI, and almost as feared, the Super Commando V8 was designed to be Plymouth’s best combination of comfort, streetability and performance. At the top of this stout B block, which was professionally rebuilt by Jeff Walton Restoration in Pomfret, Maryland, a correct 4-barrel carburetor breathes through a correct air cleaner that’s covered in a striking combination of traditional organisol and fresh lettering. Below that carburetor, a spotless orange block wears old school stamped valve covers and fully restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those manifolds, reproduction belts spin a familiar Mopar alternator above a correct fan and a fully rebuilt factory power steering pump. The big engine’s fires are lit by reproduction Chrysler Electronic Suppression wires, a Mopar coil and a proven points distributor. And its cooling is provided by a correct heavy duty radiator that’s augmented by authentic squeeze clamps and reproduction Chrysler hoses. Take a second to refocus your eyes on the clean engine bay and you’ll find a reproduction Mopar red cap battery, an appropriate washer tank and a fresh brake booster. And the entire set up, from its fenders to its firewall, is coated in the same excellent looking code B5 blue as the car’s glossy exterior panels.

At the bottom of this Plymouth a mildly freshened undercarriage, also a product of Jeff Walton Restorations, is comprised of straight floorpans that still display most of their standard factory undercoating, and a satin black chassis that still retains much of its factory luster. In the middle of that undercarriage an original A833 23 spline 4-speed, which wears a familiar 238199 partial VIN, sends power to an original 8.75 Sure Grip rear end that’s stuffed with correct 3.23 gears. Below that stellar powertrain a rebuilt front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension, which includes factory power steering, combines with standard issue power drum brakes to provide quick stops and great handling. At the center of that suspension, a power-boosting true dual exhaust system barks out a deep, vintage roar through a modern H-pipe crossover and traditional turbo mufflers. At the corners of that exhaust system, painted steel wheels spin proven 7.75-14 Firestone Deluxe Champion white walls around detailed hub caps. And all the car’s hardware and bushings, from its leak-free fuel tank to its correctly installed emergency brake cable, appear to be lucid and in good shape.

Open this Sport’s solid blue doors and you’ll find one of the coolest interiors ever bolted behind a big Mopar engine. Restored by Bay Auto Upholstery of Annapolis, Maryland, and finished in correct P6C trim, this cockpit brings a real sense of class to a car with a generally solemn and subdued nature. In front of the driver, an original rebuilt instrument cluster sits inside a supple and pliable pad. Next to that cluster, you’ll find a correct Music Master AM radio. Below that radio, an optional console holds an angled Hurst shifter inside what seems like a mile of wood trim. Below that console, fresh blue carpet is protected by heavy duty Mopar floor mats. On top of that carpet, fully restored seats prop fade-free covers between familiar lap belts and a sweet looking 3-spoke steering wheel that spins a blue rim around a mayflower centerpiece. At the sides of those seats, correct door panels carry white trim, chrome door handles and correct blue frames to a fresh white convertible cowl. Below that cowl, a fifth full-size tire splits the difference between a correct decklid decal, a correct jack and a fresh mat. And, from its blinding stainless trim all the way to its fully functional courtesy lamps, this convertible’s interior is a no-excuses, no holds barred tribute to classic American motoring.
