If you had the means to build your dream car, what would it be? For more than a few people, it’s a big block powered 1969 Chevelle SS, and the fellow who built this car went all-out, taking a clean Mailbu and giving it a laser-straight LeMans Blue body, then stuffing it with 454 cubic inches and a gorgeous parchment interior. Matching numbers cars this nice cost tens of thousands more, so this is a car that will knock people out at shows and can be driven instead of sealed away forever. Honestly, isn’t it about time you had a big block Chevelle you can enjoy?

One of the more popular Chevelle colors, the LeMans Blue finish on this car is simply stunning in person. Deep and lustrous, the paint on this car is show quality, and it’s sitting on top of some pretty amazing bodywork, too. It’s no secret that a lot of these cars led hard lives, and even when they were new, they were typically not as carefully assembled as a restored piece. But sometimes a guy falls in love and goes the extra mile, as was surely the case here. Someone spent hours and hours block sanding each panel to get rid of any ripples and waves, and probably wet sanded the paint between each coat to get it as flat and smooth as it is now. The final clearcoat probably had enough time to fully cure, and then it, too, was sanded and buffed until any trace of orange peel was exorcised from the surface. Correct white stripes were applied down the flanks, and you can see how well aligned the car is when you follow the line.  This is one of those cars where you’ll be tempted to run your fingers along the paint because it’s so deep and smooth, you may almost believe it’s still wet.

The chrome and trim is equally nice. The bumpers sport fresh chrome, front and rear, and all the stainless has either been restored and polished or replaced with quality reproduction pieces. That’s a correct SS grille up front and blacked-out SS panel on the trunk lid, along with gorgeous tail light lenses. The glass is excellent, including the Soft-Ray tinted windshield that looks way too nice to be original.

When you’re building your dream car, you’re pretty much free to go crazy, especially if you’re not starting with some kind of super-rare piece. Chevelles, even SS models, are popular cars, so there’s just no reason not to build it the way you want. And the guy who did this one was not only a horsepower junkie, but a stickler for details, too. To match the SS454 badges on the flanks, the engine was dressed the way a factory SS454 might have looked, although such an animal wasn’t available in 1969. They also took great pains to replicate factory finishes, so it looks very authentic living under the Chevelle’s hood. From the chrome air cleaner to the Chevy Orange paint to the assembly line markings on the firewall and radiator core. Brilliant finishes were used, like the cad plating on the power brake booster and alternator fan, as well as correct hoses and clamps. A reproduction Delco battery completes the illusion. The sole deviation from stock is a set of long-tube headers that allow the potent big block to breathe properly and give it a vicious sound at full throttle.

The chassis is equally nice and just as well detailed. A satin black frame and body-colored floors are the canvas, and the various parts and components are the artwork. There’s a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission hanging behind the engine, and a 12-bolt full of acceleration-friendly 3.73 gears on a Posi hangs on original style leaf springs. The exhaust system is beautifully fabricated, and includes a pair of Flowmaster mufflers exhaling through original-style chrome oval tips under the rear bumper. As with the engine, proper markings and decals have been applied throughout—if anything, it’s almost too nice under there. Wheels are 15-inch SS items wearing 225/60/15 BFGoodrich radials.

Originally equipped with a Medium Turquoise cloth interior, this one now sports a classic bucket seat interior in lovely Parchment, which is much more sophisticated and interesting than plain old white. Beautifully restored, the seats are all-day comfortable and show no signs of use or wear since the car was completed. Black carpets and dashboard (with correct SS round gauges) prevent it from being Parchment overload inside. Overhead, a new headliner has been installed, and matches the new door panels. The gauges have all been rebuilt and function properly, and a correct console has been installed between the seats. Like the rest of the car, everything is beautifully finished and highly accurate. Even the steering wheel is a correct SS piece that looks sporty and feels great in your hands.

Chevelles don’t get much nicer than this, and this one is priced right considering the amount of time and effort that went into its construction. Restored well beyond factory specifications, this is a car that will knock people dead and will require a real expert to determine that it is a well-built tribute. It’s also scary fast and a lot of fun to drive, as well was beautiful. If you’re the kind of guy who prefers a car he can drive to one that has to be protected as an investment, this may be your Chevelle. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better one, and the fact that it’s a well-executed tribute means you can drive it all you want without endangering a rare machine. As far as fun cars go, this is one of the better ones we’ve seen. Call now!
