Look through our inventory and our sold vehicles list, and you’ll see that RK Motors Charlotte sells more big block Chevelles than just about anyone else. The reason is simple: they’re some of our favorite cars. Stylish, comfortable, roomy, and most of all, a blast to drive, Chevelle convertibles like this 1969 SS396 are just about the best hobby cars you can own. Finished in brilliant Garnet Red with a gorgeous Parchment interior and white top, it’ll be impossible to keep a low profile in this one, but you won’t care because with big block power and a 4-speed, it’s just too much fun to drive.

Although the cowl tag says this one was originally code 59 Frost Green, there won’t be many guys who will argue that the bright Garnet Red isn’t a big improvement, especially on an SS convertible. And to their credit, the restorers did more than just spray red paint, they got the body straight, the gaps exact, and the panels are flat and wave-free. This was a lot more than just a paint job. We can’t find a trace of the original color anywhere on the car, and it’s obvious that this was a complete restoration inside and out of a solid, clean original car. The nice thing is that they didn’t take any liberties with the sheetmetal, which means the stock flat hood and not a cowl induction piece, and if any sheetmetal was replaced, the work is invisible. The paint is two-stage urethane that is exactly the right shade of red, not too pink, not too orange, and the white tape stripe is correct. On the road, this is one of the most solid, tight convertibles we’ve had in a long time, again a testament to the quality of the restoration and the preservation of the original car.

All the chrome was restored at the same time, including both bumpers, the rocker panel trim, and even the SS grille up front, which wasn’t blacked out like some of its siblings’ grilles were. SS396 badges were sourced and installed, and in back the proper black rub strip on the bumper has been replaced. Even the grilles at the base of the windshield are in excellent condition, and Chevelle fans know how rare it is to find a set that aren’t pitted. You’ll also note that this car has an unusual power antenna mounted on the rear deck, which is, of course, fully functional.

As popular as these cars are, and with the vast aftermarket supporting them, there’s just no reason why every Chevelle engine bay can’t be as beautifully finished as this one. From the Chevy Orange paint on the block, to the bright chrome valve covers that are far nicer than any factory chrome ever was, to the reproduction open element air cleaner, it’s extremely nice. The engine was rebuilt to L34 specs, which means that the 350 horsepower decal on the air cleaner is no joke (the 325 horse L35 would have had a closed air cleaner anyway). It starts easily, idles beautifully, and pulls the car around effortlessly, thanks to that mountain of big block torque. It also offers power steering and power disc brakes, making this a potent car that can be driven daily with pleasure. And like the body, they didn’t take any liberties in the engine bay, so the original exhaust manifolds are still in place, the intake and carburetor are correct, and all the hoses and clamps are proper reproduction pieces. There won’t be other cars this nice at the local cruise night.

A Muncie M20 4-speed transmission feeds a 12-bolt out back, all standard Chevelle SS equipment and making them some of the toughest muscle cars ever built. Underneath, the chassis is clean and solid, with good detailing but it hasn’t been over-restored. Satin black is the dominant theme, just as it was when it was new, and it does show some signs of having been driven, but you’ll be pleased when you see solid floors and stock equipment. A correct dual exhaust system is used and doesn’t even have Flowmaster mufflers, which is a pleasant change of pace. The brake system is rebuilt, the suspension offers fresh bushings and shocks, and a new gas tank hangs just ahead of the rear bumper. 14-inch SS wheels are always the right choice, and these wear fat 235/60/14 Goodyear Eagle ST radials that really stuff the wheel wells.

Parchment is perhaps our favorite GM interior color, offering a bright, clean look without the sterile feel of plain white. The warm Parchment buckets look awesome with the black carpet and dash, and even though the Chevelle wasn’t necessarily a luxury car, the interior doesn’t sure give it away. Like the chassis, there are a few slight signs that the car has been driven and enjoyed, but for the most part it is crisp and clean throughout with little wear. The correct round gauges, including a tachometer are a hallmark of a correct SS, and the center console offers a Hurst shifter that actually says “Muncie” on the handle, which is a nice touch. An AM/FM/cassette stereo radio has been fitted into the original radio’s hole in the dash, and no dashboard panels were harmed in the restoration of this Chevelle. A recent white power top goes up and down like it should, and is covered by a matching Parchment vinyl boot when it’s stowed. In the trunk, you’ll find no trace of rust as well as a correct mat and full-sized spare tire with jack assembly.

This car also includes documentation like the owner’s manual, features booklet, and a 1969 Chevelle brochure.
If you’re a Chevelle fan, you know that high-quality cars like this are tough to find. Fully restored, completely sorted, and ready to drive and enjoy, this big block SS is exactly the kind of car that we’d all like to own. Getting a car to this level requires a lot of cash, and there’s undoubtedly more wrapped up in the car than the asking price reflects. So forget about building your own, or finding one and restoring it from scratch, here’s a real SS396 convertible where all the hard work is already done. Get out of the garage and out onto the streets! Call today.
