The pro-touring movement is one of the fastest growing segments in the collector car hobby. With so many people who enjoy actually driving their classics and a plethora of aftermarket companies offering better than original equipment upgrades, it’s only natural that many builders are creating their own mix of modern performance and classic good looks. This 1968 Shelby GT500KR tribute could be the ULTIMATE combination of cutting edge performance and classic muscle car attitude. It combines a heavy dose of big engine power with modern car dynamics to create an unbeatable combination of street ready swagger. If you’re one of the many people who called just a little too late last time when our GT350-H pro-tourer sold in seven days; or the time before that when our ’69 fastback pro-tourer sold in 24 hours, this GT500KR a rare chance for redemption!

When the owner of this awesome ’68 Mustang set his dream build in motion, he wanted a solid foundation that could be transformed into the best looking Shelby tribute on the planet; and after a few months of searching, he found the solid North Carolina body you see here. With less than 70K original miles, this completely rust free car lived most of its life as a well-maintained six cylinder grocery getter that, as you can tell, would prove to be the perfect candidate for a killer pro-touring build. The owner began by separating the body from its frame and ordering Shelby-style Maier fiberglass pieces for the front clip, hood, fender extensions, decklid and tail light panel. Once the frame was media blasted and the car was bolted back together, hours were spent mocking up the fiberglass pieces to ensure proper fit and the whole body was block sanded to a completely wave free surface. When the panels were as tight and flat as possible, the body was completely disassembled and covered from top to bottom in custom mixed Dupont Chromabase Candy Apple Red and a glossy clearcoat shell. The result is one lust worthy Shelby tribute that presents modern car panel fitment, a liquid smooth finish and enough visual appeal to start its own parade.

The original GT500 added fuel to the muscle car fire by not only adding power, but also introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustang design cues ever created. At the leading edge of the car a pristine chrome bumper dissects a stainless trimmed Shelby-style grille which houses large Lucas driving lights. At the sides of that grille, clear, stainless trimmed Wagner Halogen headlights sit above two stainless trimmed bullet style parking lights; and behind the grille, a showroom fresh “Shelby” header panel script fronts a weight reducing Shelby-style fiberglass hood. At the sides of the car, purpose-built race car attributes which include Shelby-style scoops and straight GT500KR decals combine with top-notch production detailing like factory fresh “428 Cobra Jet” fender emblems and dent free stainless rocker and wheel well moldings. At the top of the car, a fresh white vinyl top crawls from a Shelby-style decklid to the top of stainless trimmed like-new glass which is bordered by pristine chrome door handles and a chrome driver’s side mirror. And at the back of the car, a silver Shelby-style rear valence hangs a pristine chrome GT500 fuel filler and two bright segmented brake lights over a show worthy chrome bumper and clear chrome trimmed reverse lights.

Pop the fiberglass hood on this sweet looking Mustang and it transforms from classic to state of the art in the blink of an eye. Looking completely natural between the cars satin black fenders is a Robert Pond Motorsports aluminum side oiler 427 which has been stroked to 482 cubic inches of road ruling fury! Built by Express Engines in Deland, Florida this monster motor maintains all the excellent street manners of a modern performance car while providing a dyno proven 575 horsepower and 573 lb./ft. of torque. At the top of the engine, two Quickfuel tuned 750 Holley carburetors mix air from a finned air cleaner with fuel from a 22 gallon stainless fuel tank. Below those carburetors, a Blue Thunder 2×4 intake props a billet distributor above a custom Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft. Below that camshaft, a Scat crankshaft pushes forged H-beam rods and forged JE pistons toward Edelbrock Performer RPM FE CBC ported heads that are capped by finned Shelby valve covers. Breathing is aided by Sanderson ceramic coated long tube headers which sprawl among Express performance plug wires. And cooling is supplied by a Griffin aluminum radiator which is equipped with three electric fans and a chrome overflow tank. In front of the engine, a March serpentine system spins a polished power steering pump, a polished AC compressor and a chrome 100 amp alternator; and an Autolite Sta-Ful battery combines with correct Autolite hoses and correct clamps to provide add a little authenticity to an already very impressive engine bay.

In the spirit of original Shelby Mustangs, this GT500KR is all about maximizing performance and being as capable in the turns as it is on the straightaway. Behind the stroked motor you’ll find a fresh Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission that’s been bolted to both an American Powertrain hydraulic clutch and a Quicktime steel bellhousing. Lift the third pedal and that modern transmission sends power to a Heidts nine inch Traction Lok rear end which is equipped with a nine inch factory third member, 3.25 Richmond gears and 31 spline axles. At the front of the car, new tubular control arms combine with a TCP shock tower brace, a one inch anti-sway bar and new coilovers to provide sharp turns; and at the back of the car, a Heidts four link suspension utilizes a panhard bar and two additional coilovers for excellent grip. Stopping is a cinch thanks to a four wheel disc Wilwood system which clamps 12 inch drilled and slotted rotors through four piston calipers, and exhaust is handled by a custom fabricated 2.5 inch true dual system which features great sounding Magnaflow mufflers and rear mounted stainless tips. In the middle of the car, welded X subframe connectors contrast well to the spotless Candy Apple Red floors and every detail from new stainless hardware to the Candy Apple Red oil drain plug has been carefully planned and looks great. Power flows to the ground through spectacular looking Vintage Wheel Works V50 wheels which wear 245/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear Bridgestone Potenza radials.

Inside the car you’ll find a freshly restored factory vinyl interior that is super nice and fits the character of this custom Mustang perfectly. The restored front seats wear their new covers well and feature firm padding that’s probably spent most of its life holding trophies instead of people. Below the seats, new black carpet is sandwiched between Dynamat sound deadening insulation and cool, silver stitched Cobra floor mats. Top dead center on that carpet is a great looking wood trimmed, and cobra branded console which holds a traditional chrome shifter and Shelby shift knob behind traditional Stewart Warner Greenline console gauges. At the front of the car, a spectacular looking wood trimmed dash includes a Shelby 140 MPH speedometer and a Shelby 8,000 RPM tachometer above an MP3 compatible Alpine CD player that’s hooked to a modern six speaker sound system. Connecting the driver to the road is an excellent looking Shelby wood rim steering wheel that props a pristine Shelby horn button on an Ididit steering column, and perfectly matches the cars wood trimmed and chrome detailed door panels. Behind the cockpit, a fully restored trunk houses an Alpine amplifier between two 12 inch Kicker subwoofers and still maintains enough room to stash a couple of collapsible chairs for a Saturday afternoon car show.

As expected, an ultimate build like this comes with substantial documentation. Included with the sale is a copy of the September, 2011 issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords in which the car was featured and a binder full of restoration photos, restoration receipts, manuals, books and dyno test results.

Absolutely no expense was spared on this 1968 Shelby GT500KR. With an authentic Shelby appearance and a modern Mustang feel, it combines the style and class of yesterday with some of the best performance technology of today. For many people, the essence of the classic car hobby is to have fun with the hardware, and this scary fast, instantly recognizable classic is an absolute blast!
