The great thing about early Camaros is how you can seamlessly blend original and custom touches to create something that is completely unique, yet still appears authentic. This 1967 RS/SS is a perfect example, with a big block under the hood, a gorgeous maroon paint job, and a brilliant interior that ties it all together very nicely. No, it’s not one of those cars that you have to seal in a trailer every time you go out, it’s a car that you get in, turn the key, and hit the road, and smile every minute of the journey.

The paint and bodywork were done a few years ago, but the workmanship was high quality and the maintenance since then has been exemplary. Originally Marina Blue, the dark maroon it now sports (very similar to Madeira Maroon) looks gorgeous, especially with the white SS stripes. Done in two-stage urethane, perhaps with a bit more metallic in it than original, it literally glows in the sun and picks up reflections like no Madeira Maroon we’ve ever seen before. The steel under the paint has been nicely finished with a lot of block sanding before the paint was applied, so the panels are nice and straight, and body gaps are above average. A cowl induction hood was installed while the car was being refurbished, and looks aggressive with the clean lines of the ’67. Out back, an original style ducktail spoiler has been added as well. As I said, when the modifications are appropriate to the car, it’s easy to blend them into an original look.

With the cars transition from a standard Camaro to an SS, correct badges were added throughout, including an SS on the grille (which remains in excellent condition), fuel filler cap, and leading edges of the front fenders. Correct emblems have been added on the nose, and the fenders carry crossed flag emblems, which were big at Chevrolet in the ‘60s. The chrome bumpers are very nice, and all the stainless was obviously restored or replaced when the car was painted a few years ago. The folding headlight doors operate correctly, and the taillight lenses are still crisp and clear. In 1967, two different big block engines were available, but the motor currently in this beautiful coupe is a thundering 1971 vintage 396 cubic inch V8. Detailed to look original, including Chevy Orange paint and a correct open element air cleaner, it also subtly blends standard equipment and modified. There’s an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor up top and a set of ceramic-coated long tube headers handle the exhaust, while an HEI ignition system has been retrofitted for reliability. Chrome valve covers dress up the engine compartment, and a reproduction Delco battery provides the finishing touch. Thanks to expert tuning, it fires up with a single turn of the key, and idles with a rumble that tells you a healthy camshaft has been installed.

The big block churns horsepower aft through a Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission, which gives the car an authentic feel if you’re going to have that much horsepower at your disposal, you want to be able to churn the gears, right? The floors have been replaced and are now satin black, which makes it easy to maintain and looks sanitary. Those long-tube headers feed a Dynomax dual exhaust system that sounds predatory and terminate in chrome tips under the rear bumper. Brakes and suspension have been fully rebuilt to make this car comfortable and safe, and you’ll notice that it carries manual steering and brakes this is not a car designed to chase groceries! A new gas tank hangs out back and feeds the engine a steady diet of high octane fuel through fresh lines and a new fuel pump. And there’s no better wheel to put on your early Camaro than a set of correct 15-inch Rallyes, which, in the case of this car, wear 235/60/15 Goodyear Eagle GTII white-letter radials.
Like the rest of the car, the interior seamlessly blends stock and custom touches. This Camaro originally carried a Parchment interior, but with black accents instead of the custom maroon accents it has today. Both front and rear seats were recovered when the rest of the car was restored, and show little sign of use. The foam is still firm and comfortable, and the parchment vinyl is in excellent condition save for some slight wear on the driver’s side, but that only proves that this car was built to drive. Overhead there’s a brand new headliner, and maroon carpets anchor the bright interior. New door panels were installed at the same time, and are still bright and clean, with no discoloration. The dash was restored to match the exterior, although the gauges appear to be original, including the auxiliary gauges on the console. The factory AM radio still lives in the dash, and the shifter is topped by a Hurst cue ball knob. This inviting interior makes it awfully easy to imagine yourself behind the wheel, banging the Muncie through the gears as the big block belts out the horsepower.

The trunk is finished as original, with a recent trunk mat, a full-sized spare and a complete jack assembly.

Documentation includes an original 1967 Camaro owner’s manual and warranty booklet.
