There are show cars that look good, and then there are show cars like this custom-engineered 1967 Mustang fastback that are wicked manifestations of vintage aesthetics and modern technology. As a previous concours judge and lifetime Mustang enthusiast George Huisman, founder of Classic Design Concepts, created a line of turnkey Mustangs that are built from the ground up to provide a perfect blend of old school Motown style and new school SoCal comfort. This razor-sharp coupe, Flashback number 001, is the very first of those Mustangs; and was at one time both Huisman’s personal car and CDC’s premier press and show mule. When it debuted at the 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada, the car easily walked away with Ford Best in Show and Outstanding Achievement in Design and was prominently featured in numerous print and digital publications which included a cover spread in Hot Rod magazine. If you’re looking for a mind blowing pro-tourer that’s every bit as impressive as it is unique, this take-no-prisoners pony car is your ticket!

The foundation for Flashback 001’s build is an all-steel body that displays tight fit and finish, super smooth surfaces and laser-straight style lines. As the industry’s number one manufacturer of replacement body shells, Dynacorn utilizes a rigorous process that forms 1006 universal automotive grade steel into thicker-than-factory body panels that are eventually bonded together via increased CO2 welding techniques and thoroughly dipped in a custom galvanizing solution. Once Flashback’s top-notch body had been massaged and hand-altered by the folks at CDC, a dynamic coat of custom Sherwin Williams Pearl Blue metal flake was expertly applied under Champagne racing stripes and a thick and glossy clearcoat shell that’s been buffed to a fantastic shine. The result is one lust-worthy award-winner which oozes cool, looks absolutely evil and has enough aesthetic appeal to start its own parade!

And when I say CDC massaged and altered this Mustang, I’m not hyping repositioned trim, cheesy tape stripes and a few crude fiberglass cooling ducts. I’m talking about an OEM-quality build that features modified fascias, a tastefully altered profile and enough 21st century lighting tweaks to make Best Buy’s Geek Squad crawl out of their Beetle and take notice. At the front of the car, a prominent mesh grille hangs a “Powered by Ford” emblem between two modern halogen headlights that are seated in two custom headlight buckets. At the bottom of that grille, a super slick valence is fitted with large, aerodynamic fog lights which mimic the shape of attractive, functional cooling ducts. At the top of that valence, a custom fiberglass hood features chrome heat extractors that come complete with small, LED turn signal indicators. At the back of that hood like-new glass, which is smoked on all surfaces but the windshield, sits inside dent-free stainless trim, bright stainless wipers and new chrome drip rails. At the base of that glass, traditional chrome door handles, functional side scoops and 5.4 LITRE SUPERCHARGED” fender emblems ride between body-matched mirrors, scalloped C-pillars and small LED marker lights. And at the back of the car, a fiberglass decklid hangs a low-profile bikini spoiler above a custom “CDC” branded fuel filler, LED tail lights that feature completely integrated reverse lamps, and a sculpted rear valence that wraps around four stainless exhaust tips.

Naturally the car looks great, but its biggest selling point is the supercharged 5.4 liter ground pounder that rumbles right under its lightweight hood. Cranking out roughly 600 horsepower, Ford Racing’s revolutionary modular V8 was influenced heavily by the firm’s own GT super car, and delivers a muscle car that’s both fast and engaging. Utilizing an iron block with a forged steel crank, forged steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, aluminum heads and dual overhead camshafts, the smooth mill makes great muscle car sounds while providing surprising efficiency and a docile nature. Twist the key and the pedigreed V8 rumbles to life, sending baritone notes down a 2.5-inch exhaust that features Ford Racing headers. Punch the throttle and an Eaton M122 supercharger zings the engine toward redline thanks to a lightweight clutch. Jump out on the open road and a high capacity cooling system ensures hour after hour of spirited reliability. The car’s professionally finished engine bay looks very clean, not featuring any of the flash you’d expect for such an extensive build. But to anyone who knows anything about cars in general, the satin black blower at the top of the block and the bright blue cam covers are a dead giveaway that they’re looking at something special!

All too often classic cars, especially show classics, are geared more toward aesthetics than performance. It’s kind of like walking into a chop shop, staring at a rib-eye steak and then realizing the clever butcher actually sold you sirloin. Sure, the product still looks mouth-watering, but it’s just too soft and not quite as satisfying. Because this Mustang is actually a functional road warrior, as opposed to a ropes and red carpet display piece, CDC made sure it had plenty of flavor and spice via a custom, curve-carving undercarriage. At the front of the car, you’ll find Hotchkis struts and control arms, Strange steel adjustable coil over shocks and Flaming River power rack and pinion steering. And at the back of the car, you’ll find a custom four link suspension that’s been fitted with high quality QA1 coil overs. Behind the modern V8, a fresh Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed transmission spins power to a Moser nine inch rear end that’s outfitted with tall 3.70 gears and four pinion Trac Loc 31 spline axles. And at the sides of the engine, large diameter mandrel bent pipes send spent gases through an H-pipe crossover, aggressive dual chamber mufflers and attractive quad outlet exhaust tips. Step on the throttle and a stainless fuel tank supplies gas to fresh stainless fuel lines. Step on the binders and a Wilwood four wheel power disc brake system utilizes large calipers and drilled and slotted rotors to provide serious resistance for the serious motor. Power is put to the pavement by a great looking quartet of 18 inch Forgeline wheels which spin 245/40 front and 275/35 rear Dunlop Direzzas around Champagne colored spokes. And everything under this car from its solid floor pans to its stainless brake lines wears either a nice coat of satin black paint or a finished metal surface.

One of the major selling points of the Flashback series was CDC’s thoughtfully redesigned and thoroughly modernized leather interior. And we’re not talking about some guy with a sewing machine either; this keyless-entry-equipped cockpit is a 100% complete modular installation which provides the fit and reliability of a major OEM manufacturer. The seats are power units that wear black leather covers, tan threads, tan center sections and two-piece lap belts. At the front of the car a leather-topped dual cowl dash, which features the same tan stitching as the aforementioned seats, hangs a Bongiovi tuned JVC CD player between custom Classic Instruments primary and auxiliary gauges. At the center of the car, a custom leather-wrapped and tan stitched console anchors a speed-drilled shifter between controls for a Vintage Air climate system, a numbered plaque and switches for power windows and a battery cut off. And at the bottom of the car, like-new carpet is stretched tight under color-matched floor mats, Rockford Fosgate kick panel speakers and Rockford Fosgate quarter panel speakers. In front of the driver, a chrome speed-drilled steering wheel spins around a Flaming River tilt steering column. At the sides of the car, detailed door panels hang tan accent trim above tan-stitched armrests, flush-fit power door lock buttons and pristine stainless trim. And Behind the cockpit, a custom upholstered trunk carries a Rockford Fosgate amp, a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer and connection points for the car’s rear-mount battery.

Included with the sale of this one-of-a-kind Mustang is an album full of extensive build pictures.

There’s no question this is a very special car and that its existence has moved the bar for OEM-quality customs. If you’re the sort of person who wants to own only the best, and understands that quality doesn’t compromise, then you’re already familiar with what this car has to offer. Stunning to look at, thrilling to drive, and exceptional to show, it’s a state-of-the-art classic that will remain timeless thanks to smart design and immaculate craftsmanship. Buy it today, and in 20 years, you’ll still be drawing crowds!
