If you’re a car enthusiast, you already know the iconic status of Shelby’s 427-powered Cobra. But every legacy has a beginning, and, for the Cobra, that beginning is rooted in cars like this striking small block roadster. A modern day continuation of the 289 FIA that claimed America’s first World Manufacturer’s Championship, this svelte beast combines unbeatable heritage with subtle, modern updates. If you’re looking for a fresh twist on an old favorite, forget about project cars pieced together from leftovers. Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte and pick up this impressive Era roadster. It’s reliable, fully sorted and ready to rock and roll!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Wearing a virtually flawless shell, this road-ready Cobra rivets load-free high temperature tooling resin to a Shelby-correct aluminum inner body to create a rock-solid classic that mixes great fit with a noise-free driving experience. Professionally gelcoated panels feature the smooth surfaces and typically tight gaps we’ve come to expect from top-notch replicas. The car’s excellent finish is a testament to the OEM quality and talent of its builder: Era Replica Automobiles of New Britain, Connecticut. And a sweet combination of Wimbledon White on Mitsubishi Lucerne Green Mica PPG puts a fresh twist on Britain’s tried-and-true Racing Green aesthetics.

Speaking of details, they’re often the downfall of an otherwise excellent build. Not so with this roadster, as every aspect of its design enhances Shelby’s innate style and appeal. At the front of the car, load-bearing bumperettes reflect Lucas tri-pod headlights, bullet-style parking lamps and a familiar Shelby emblem. Behind that emblem, a stainless-trimmed windshield rides between small wipers, tinted visors and clear wind wings. Below those wings, a bullet-style racing mirror complements finned air extractors, colorful Ford emblems and a requisite Monza fuel filler. And at the back of the car, Stone Guard-protected fenders flow into chrome-trimmed taillights, a second Shelby emblem, two more bumperettes and a lockable trunk handle.

ENGINE

Twist this Cobra’s chrome hood ties and you’ll find 302 cubic inches of High Output V8 that was supplied, as it should be, by the Ford Motor Company. Officially titled as a 1967 Ford 289, this 1995 welterweight wraps race-proven internals in a full array of trophy worthy aesthetics. At the top of the Cast Silver mill, street-tuned Weber 48IDA 2-barrels marry wind with fuel that’s supplied by a Facet Blue Top pump, a Holley pressure regulator and braided stainless fluid lines. The resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from a clean Cobra intake to Ford-spec heads, which hide under a Ford Motorsport breather and finned Cobra valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, MSD 6A electronic ignition sequences fire through high quality Taylor plug wires. As combustion is sparked, resultant gases are jettisoned through big, ceramic-coated headers. Charge is provided by aesthetically pleasing March pulleys. And a beefy Griffin radiator, which stores water in front of an automatic puller fan, a familiar Cobra water neck and a FoMoCo water pump, provides the cooling. First rate ancillaries, like a Marshall fuel pressure gauge, a Harrison expansion tank and a Canton Road Race oil pan, set the roughly 300 horsepower mill apart from it’s lesser brethren. And, as with any expertly built Cobra, the car’s engine bay is detailed and ready for show, from its stainless heat shields all the way to its trick Halon Fire Suppression System.

DRIVETRAIN

One of the best things about buying any high quality replica is the modern hardware underneath. Fully sorted and completely powder-coated, this Shelby’s tubular, fabricated steel chassis and fully independent suspension are ready to hit the toughest track you can find. Behind the engine, a Borg Warner T5 5-speed spins between a Tilton-fed Hayes clutch and tough Lakewood bellhousing. All that spinning eventually makes its way to a Jaguar rear end that’s stuffed with stout 3.73 gears. Those gears are countered by four big calipers, which squeeze four vented discs. At the front of the car’s aluminum floor, modern rack-and-pinion steering makes low speed parking almost as easy as high speed sweeps. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to a large-diameter exhaust system that’s equipped with DynoMax Ultra Flo mufflers. And power meets the pavement through attractive Dayton spokes, which twist 215/65R15 Michelin XGT V4s around bright chrome knock-offs.

INTERIOR

Cobra interiors are usually stalwart and simple, but this roadster’s Beige leather cockpit is comfortable and appealing. The 427-style seats are firm, look as good as new and feature 4-point racing harnesses for increased safety. In front of those seats, a color-keyed dash hangs a tight leather façade around a small glovebox, controls for the car’s heater and a full outfit of Smiths gauges. At the sides of that dash, steel-frame doors are dressed in soft inserts, 427-style map pockets and small chrome handles. Below those doors, wool Wilton carpet rides between AC foot pedals, an extended footbox, a removable transmission tunnel and chrome hand controls. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel spins an “AC” branded horn button around an Era column and AC ‘take off’ hub. And behind the passengers, an aluminum-clad trunk centers a fifth Dayton wheel and full-size spare tire between a knock-off tool and scissor jack.
