When the GTO officially kicked off the muscle car era, it wasn’t GM’s impressive engineering prowess or Pontiac’s hard-fought performance image that turned the car into a legend. It was the opportunity for any customer to walk into the showroom, buy a small platform with a big engine and, with the flip of a checkbook, deck it out with some major factory-backed performance hardware. See, our beloved Pontiac ‘goat’ is the direct result of what happens when a renegade car division that’s ran by busted-knuckle gearheads is confident enough to defy its corporate culture, ‘borrow’ Ferrari’s most coveted name and then stage an octane-fueled war against its crosstown rivals. And I can’t think of any GTO which embodies that take-no-prisoners attitude better than this tweaked Tri-power hardtop. With a stout V8, a fully-functional hood scoop and a tough Muncie 4-speed, it’s the PERFECT cruiser for any muscle car enthusiast who wants to prowl the show field AND heat up the asphalt!

The beneficiary of a complete frame-off restoration, this handsome A-Body is a perfect blend of expert craftsmanship and fine attention to detail. The car’s straight and solid body is covered in a deep, highly polished coat of correct GM code R Montero Red urethane that’s both glossy and durable. Under that paint tight panel gaps, which are consistent throughout, indicate this Pontiac was a clean piece before the restoration even began. And overall, the car presents as one clean, show-worthy classic that looks great hammering down the highway and natural idling through the cruise in!

Tough, understated and attractive, this GTO perfectly epitomizes Pontiac’s image of top-dog performance wrapped in an upscale, universally appealing package. The front of the car is dominated by trademark, stainless trimmed split grilles that are anchored between stacked T3 headlights and a pristine satin-finish arrow head. Below those grilles a body-width chrome bumper, which stretches around clear, square parking lights, displays a raked back appearance that gives the car a wider, more aggressive look. Inside those grilles, a prominent, wide-set “GTO” emblem makes a promise of performance that’s fulfilled by a new for 1965 GTO-exclusive hood scoop. Behind that hood scoop, like-new glass combines with well-maintained stainless trim, straight chrome drip rails and a correct driver’s side mirror to highlight the car’s awesome pillarless hardtop. Below that glass, expressive ‘coke bottle’ fenders hang dent-free wheel well trim and arrow-straight rocker moldings around correct door edge guards. Above those rocker moldings bright red GTO crests, which include “6.5 litre” displacement stampings, combine with Royal Bobcat call-outs and black inlayed “GTO” quarter emblems to provide a bit of visual pop. Behind those GTO emblems, a second body-width chrome bumper, which is equipped with optional deluxe reverse lamps, rides below a great looking finned valence that’s branded with a prominent white “Pontiac” script. And the back of the car is completed by an ominous “GTO” decklid emblem, a second satin-finish arrow head and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

Hoist this tiger’s fully-functional hood and you’ll find a 389 cubic inch V8 that was completely rebuilt during the car’s extensive restoration and upfitted with Pontiac’s legendary Tri-Power setup. Correct chrome valve covers sit at the sides of three Rochester 2-barrel carburetors that, when the hood closes, seal inside a rare, dealer-installed cold air intake. Below those carburetors, a fresh coat of dynamic Pontiac Turquoise adorns the big engine’s block from intake to oil pan; and a 7-blade fan spins behind a correct radiator that’s equipped with reproduction GM hoses and modern clamps. At the sides of the block, fully-restored exhaust manifolds dump spent gases into great sounding true dual pipes. And throughout the engine bay, niceties such as a bright yellow throttle return spring, fresh decals, a cool GM Optikleen washer fluid bottle, a reproduction Delco Energizer battery and factory correct Harrison air conditioning hardware add both texture and flash. Visually, this GTO’s satin black inner fenders and fully-finished hood create an awesome frame for its turquoise V8. And I’m willing to bet the car will eventually need a fresh pair of hood springs because of its new owner’s constant desire to show the polished mill off.

Based on a quick ‘lift and look’, this Pontiac’s clean undercarriage appears to have logged very few miles since its complete restoration. The car’s solid, satin black floor and rust free frame are absolutely spotless and present a fresh factory sheen. Its front suspension was completely rebuilt along with its correct power steering and correct heavy duty power four wheel drum brakes. And power from the growling 389 is sent through a rugged Muncie 4-speed transmission to a familiar GM 10 bolt rear end that’s complete with new shocks, new coil springs and a reproduction maintenance tag. In front of that transmission, the big engine’s turquoise oil pan is completely dry indicating no catastrophic leaks. At the sides of that transmission, a factory replacement true dual exhaust system incorporates two turbo mufflers and authentic wrinkle-bent tail pipes in front of familiar stainless side splitter tips. At the corners of that transmission, 14 inch Hurst wheels spin four F70-14 Firestone Super Sport Wide Oval redlines around black and gold center caps and bright chrome lug nuts. And even the car’s recently replaced fuel tank, fluid lines and chassis hardware still retain their parts store shine.

Take a look inside the car’s cockpit and you’ll find a newly assembled black vinyl interior which features firm Pontiac stitched seats and a completely restored walnut veneer dash. Positioned directly in front of the driver, correct optional rally gauges, that are intended to be reminiscent of European sports cars, look great and function just as well as they did back in 1965. Below those gauges, a correct factory optioned AM/FM push button radio sits in excellent looking new chrome trim which contrasts well with the gloss black lower dash. Between the seats, an attractive full-length console props a chrome Hurst shifter and a rare Pontiac vacuum gauge above excellent looking finned trim and like-new black carpet that’s protected by sturdy rubber floor mats. At the sides of the seats, new door panels feature new stainless trim and chrome handles under correct red GTO emblems, and above the seats a new black headliner still retains its factory gloss. In front of the driver, a correct stainless trimmed Pontiac steering wheel spins a trademark turquoise centerpiece around a factory tilt steering wheel. And behind the cockpit, an expertly restored trunk features a full-size spare tire and correct decklid lid decals.

Included with the sale of this super cool GTO is an original owner’s manual, an original warranty booklet, and a small packet of Pontiac Historic Services documentation.

Fully-sorted and ready to roll, this iconic red GTO is an ideal blend of performance and style. The car’s an absolute pleasure to drive; and with its killer good looks, it’ll win trophies and turn heads seven days a week. If you’re looking for the opportunity to pick up a high quality muscle car to enjoy for years to come, here’s your chance!
