Rock solid is how most experts would define the mid-year Corvette market. It appears that the demand for 1963-57 Corvettes has been completely unaffected by the economic issues that plague the rest of the world, and today there are few smarter places to park your money. And if you’re going to invest, be sure to do it right and get a documented, pedigreed car that will continue to appreciate with the market, a car such as this stunning Milano Maroon 1965 L84 coupe. With 100% matching numbers, a documented and detailed restoration, as well as simply being a wonderful car to drive, it’s one of the best early Corvettes we’ve had the pleasure of offering in a long, long time. Best of all, this one is priced well under the money. The current Corvette Market Price Guide rates the 65 L84 as an “A”, with a high end value of $120K for the best examples, and $65K for a project car. This example is a perfect car to drive and enjoy, while showing well at any gathering of Corvettes.

On a high-end Corvette like this, the restoration has to be first-rate, and this one certainly fits the bill. The entire body was stripped and the original fiberglass was refinished and filled before being block sanded to near perfection. Look at the incredibly precise gaps, particularly the doors where the fit is worlds better than original. Dig how flush the hood fits with the fenders, and how well the headlight doors align with the nose. None of that is easy or cheap. The Milano Maroon finish is two-stage urethane, which gives it a shine that will last practically forever, and you can forget about factory-style flaws, because this one is as smooth as glass.

All the trim was restored as well, including the delicate front and rear bumpers and the lower grille that uses horizontal strips to create a clean look. New badges, including the Fuel Injection badges on the flanks, were installed, as well as fresh lenses in the parking and tail lights. The glass is excellent with no signs of age or delamination, even in the extremely expensive rear window, which practically looks new.

The engine is the original HG code L84 block, with 11:1 compression, a high-lift cam, and that radical Rochester fuel injection system. Recently rebuilt to the tune of over $2200, the injection system works flawlessly, with a clean idle and linear power delivery all the way to redline. And if you haven’t heard one of these snarling to 6000 RPM through a set of side pipes, you’re missing the best engine note this side of LeMans. Fully restored and expertly detailed, the engine bay is a symphony of correct finned aluminum and bright Chevy Orange paint. The massive air filter is the only assembly that can flow enough air to feed the Rochester injection unit, and the L84 used a special camshaft to eke out as much power as possible. Even if you were packing a big block, this is an engine to be respected on the street.

That potent L84 is backed by the original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission driving a 3.55 Posi out back. Detailed to factory standards, which includes a satin black frame and raw fiberglass floors, the chassis is ready to compete at any level. The side pipes are correct for this car, just be sure to watch your legs when you’re climbing out—even with the aluminum head shield, it takes practice to do it right. New lines and hoses have been used throughout, ensuring that the car is completely road-worthy, and all the details are correctly done. It rides on a set of beautiful aluminum knock-off wheels wearing reproduction 7.75-15 Firestone gold stripe tires.

Bright white vinyl is a great contrast to the somber Milano Maroon, and the way GM combined the white seats with the black carpets and dash creates one of the most stylish interiors of the era. The seats are so crisp and new that I’d be afraid to sit on them without a Tyvek suit, and the door panels look like they were just installed yesterday. Overhead a white headliner keeps it things bright and airy inside, and with that big rear window, the light seats are probably not a bad idea. All the gauges have been restored, with crisp markings and bright needles, and the clock works as it should. The metallic center console is beautifully done, framing the chrome shifter and giving it a perfect 1960s vibe inside. No detail was overlooked during the restoration of this Corvette.

Documentation includes photos of all the critical casting numbers and stampings, a Rochester Fuel Injection Service Manual, receipts from the restoration, and a letter from the NCRS regarding the car’s shipment date and originating dealership, Ed Stinn Chevrolet in Cleveland, Ohio.

Protect yourself from future economic meltdowns, and invest in plastic instead. They aren’t making any more mid-year Corvettes, and the top-quality cars like this numbers-matching L84/4-speed coupe will always have a willing and enthusiastic market behind them. Even with careful use, this car should continue to appreciate, and there aren’t many better driving vintage machines than a well-tuned fuelie Corvette.
