In 2014, after 13 years of being America’s number one fleet sedan, a redesigned Impala will once again take its rightful place as the stylish line-topper for GM’s powerhouse Chevrolet division. It’s a move Chevy fans, no matter what generation, have tirelessly championed for decades. And when one takes a close look at this awesome 1965 Turbo-Fire 409 Impala, it becomes perfectly clear why the Impala, despite its ever broadening definition, STILL enjoys such a loyal following. Steadfast, distinguished and great to look at, this solid hunk of Detroit steel carries the trademark combination of handsome looks and rugged versatility that’s built Chevrolet into one of the largest and most respected brands in the world. And when you add those attributes with the fact that it contains the original Turbo-Fire engine, a near bulletproof 2-speed Powerglide transmission and a correct Artesian Turquoise exterior, you get one incredible cruiser! If you’re in the market for a tailored classic that wraps limitless appeal in exoteric style, welcome to the large and diverse family called Impala!

1965 brought a redesign for the Impala that saw the elimination of the X-frame for a full-width perimeter frame, and more importantly a new body that featured a lot of curves. At the front of this sleek showboat, a broad stainless grille hangs four halogen headlights and small amber parking lamps under an ornate Chevrolet emblem, and within the grille you’ll find Impala SS lettering just below a wraparound chrome bumper. At the sides of that grille, traditional cross-flag emblems and a chrome 409 badging reveal what’s lying under the hood. At the top of the car, subtle hood spears lead the eye to like-new glass that’s cleared by bright stainless wipers. The sides are sleek and clear of badging except for Chevrolet mirrors and super sport lettering on the front fender. At the back of the car, a stainless-trimmed and engine-turned valence hangs six familiar tail lights between a second Chevrolet crest, a small “CHEVROLET” script and a second wraparound bumper. The body is incredible, but the appeal of this vehicle lies under the hood.

In the early days of the horsepower wars, the 409 was arguably the go-to choice for racers. There was simply nothing else on the road that could touch its top of the line option of 425 horsepower. However, 1965 brought an end to the 409 and only early production models were equipped with the 409. The later models were equipped with the new Mark IV 396ci big blocks. So we don’t have to tell you how finding a true 1965 Impala that left the factory with a 409ci V8 is pretty damn special. Resting within this engine bay is the original 340hp 409ci Chevy V8 Powerplant that sits covered in Chevy Orange paint that’s as good as the paint on my daily driver. Everything within the engine bay shows exceptionally well. From the chrome valve cover that wears the 340hp 409 V8 badging, to the unique 409 valve covers, it is sanitary and brilliantly executed. The block wears a correct 3857656 casting number, six digit VIN, and beside it is T0205JE which means it was built on February 5th in the Flint, Michigan, plant and is designated as a 340hp 409. Finishes on all the ancillary components are correct, and the exhaust headers are some of the best I’ve ever seen. The hoses wear correct GM markings and wear tower hose clamps, the radiator is freshly restored, and even the hood pad is brand new because there’s nothing worse than a beautiful engine compartment with a shaggy hood pad hanging over it. It starts with a bark, and rumbles like a vintage NASCAR stocker at idle, which isn’t too far from the truth.

Put the Impala on a lift and you’ll reveal the aforementioned perimeter frame that looks as if it hasn’t seen any road time. Bolted to the original block is a Powerglide 2-speed automatic, which is ideally suited to both the car’s luxury mission and the big block’s torque curve. It floats along with effortless ease and the fewer shifts, the fewer times you’ll feel the car working. Out back there’s a beefy 12-bolt with Posi-traction and highway-oriented 3.31 gears that make this car the perfect vehicle for, say, cruising across the plains of Texas at high speeds, which is undoubtedly what many were used for. Over the course of its life someone upgraded the front brakes to more reliable disc brakes while keeping the drum brakes on the rear. A correct dual exhaust system fits well and sounds right, tucking up out of sight behind the rear bumper. It rides on what appears to be the original steel Rally wheels that have been wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas rubber.

The interior is simply beautiful, dressed in contrasting aqua and white to match the exterior. Pure ‘60s elegance all the way, with a sporty vibe, that was the Impala SS. Everything is so sparkling white, you might want to wear a clean suit when you drive it, and we make sure the guys in the shop check twice before they climb aboard. Stretching across the driver’s side of the instrument panel, the restored speedometer shows crisp numbers and a crystal clear lens. To the right, another panel houses the original AM radio. All the correct SS badging is included, with emblems on the console and door panels. The steering wheel is beautifully restored with lovely, delicate details like the chrome rings around the rim and the slender horn ring.

This ’65 Impala SS has already received a lot of praise for its AACA Hershey Senior First and All GM Nationals 981-Point Diamond certification. Included in the sale of this immaculate car are the original dealer’s invoice, original window sticker, original protect-o-plate, owner’s manual, and dealer brochure.

Finding a true numbers matching 1965 Impala SS equipped from the factory with a 409ci V8 is exceptionally rare. If you are in the market for a unique B-body, this is the Impala for you. This Impala has already caught the attention of many of our employees here, and won’t last long under the lights in our showroom.
