Here at RK Motors Charlotte, we sell the most exclusive collector cars in the world seven days a week. But every now and then we still get a car that 1) we’ve never had before and 2) is just a ton of fun to own. In fact, when we first saw this awesome 1958 Nomad pull into our showroom, all we wanted to do was jump in the thing and head for the closest beach. And since the car’s body has been completely refinished, equipped with a reliable Chevy small block and dressed with an interior that’s bigger than some people’s bedrooms, it was more than willing to make the trip. Both rare and highly desirable, this old school derriere hauler is an all-American, six passenger road cruiser that’s one of the coolest people movers on the planet! And whether you’re a diehard Chevy fan, a wagon enthusiast or just someone who wants to drive something nobody’s ever seen, it’ll have you dreaming of good times and great friends!

Despite red hot sales for Chevrolet’s top sedan, the Impala, the brand’s top wagon, the Nomad, proved less popular and, thanks to attrition, has now become somewhat of a rarity. Fortunately, it appears this slick resto-mod has always been an active, relatively solid piece which benefitted from 54 years of owners that were smart enough to realize what they had. And recently, thanks to a ten year restoration and four parts cars, it was given a second chance at boulevard glory. Once the car’s tired enamel was removed, hours of skilled metalwork produced an incredibly straight fuselage. When the rebuild was close to completion, that arrow-straight fuselage was covered in an assured and appropriate coat of bright red two-stage. And today, despite its purpose built nature as a work vehicle and road trip machine, this classy Chevy can be considered both handsome and exquisite.

Speaking of detailing, Chevrolet’s new-for-1958 design language certainly did its fair share to promote the sale of sunglasses. And, as with its sculpted body, all of this Nomad’s trim has been returned to excellent condition. At the front of the car, a heavy chrome bumper props a broad stainless grille behind four clear parking lamps. Above that grille, traditional Chevrolet hood ornamentation rides between bright halogen headlights and good looking ’58 Chevy-exclusive fender toppers. At the sides of those headlights, straight stainless trim spears, which visually connect the car’s front fenders with its rear fins, are molded around bright Nomad emblems. At the edges of those spears, dent-free rocker guards and stylish exhaust ports combine with ’58 Chevy-exclusive fender louvers and traditional chrome door handles to lend a finished look to the car’s bright profile. At the top of those handles, spotless stainless trim combines with a new chrome mirror, small stainless visors and bright chrome wipers to frame factory-fresh glass. And at the back of that trim, vertical trunk spears and classic Chevrolet ornamentation complement bullet-style tail lights, a second chrome bumper and round reverse lamps.

Hoist this Bel Air’s rolled hood and you’ll find a mean 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 that’s been completely finished for show and fully built to go! At that top of that stout small block, a polished air cleaner forces wind into a coated Edelbrock carburetor that’s juiced by fresh stainless lines and tightly braided hoses. At the base of that carburetor, a high performance Edelbrock intake hangs a familiar HEI distributor between polished aluminum valve covers. At the base of those valve covers, AC Delco Packard Delcore Electronic Suppression Wires snake between old school exhaust manifolds. And in front of those manifolds, traditional V-belts spin a Sanden AC compressor next to a chrome alternator, an old school GM washer tank and what appears to be a correct radiator. Aesthetically, the Chevy Orange mill and its assortment of polished and braided accessories contrast well against the car’s satin black bay. And details like a fresh brake booster, modern power steering components and a built in battery cutoff ensure this Nomad runs every bit as good as it looks.

Park this full-size tail hauler on a lift and you’ll find a fully sorted undercarriage that, while clean, is certainly no stranger to road time. The car’s solid floorpans are covered in a seamless coat of GM satin black paint that perfectly complements its sturdy X-frame. Just aft of the aforementioned small block, a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed spins a correct GM rear end that literally sails the engine through its broad power band. Under that rock-solid drivetrain, a completely rebuilt coil suspension is equipped with modern power steering, power front disc and rear drum brakes and a beefy rear sway bar. At the center of the floors, a stainless, true dual exhaust system utilizes correct turbo mufflers, which look almost as cool as they sound, to weave an aggressive full throttle rumble into a subdued and classy idle. At the corners of the suspension, high quality 235/55R17 Ventus HRIIs frame polished Boyd Coddington wheels. And everything from this Nomad’s stiff shocks to its shiny stainless fluid lines is pliable, free and ready to hit the pavement.

Climb inside this razor-sharp Chevy and you’ll find a mildly modified interior that features dramatic style and enough great looking trim to payroll a small upholstery shop. Covered in a simple combination of leather and tweed, the car’s big bench seats are all-day comfortable and display no wrinkles or annoying creases. In front of those seats, a traditional wraparound dash, which sports a slick coat of bright red paint, hangs bright silver trim and fully restored telemetry behind modern air conditioning, a modern Pioneer CD player and a cool “Nomad POSITRACTION” emblem. Beneath that dash, clean brown carpet props color-keyed floor mats below hidden kick speakers. At the sides of that carpet, two-tone door panels look great behind bright red frames, fully integrated tweeters and slightly modified trim. And above those panels, a stain-free headliner places an unparalleled emphasis on exactly how much iron your money is buying. In front of the driver, a chrome tilt steering column spins a polished and color-keyed wheel around a polished shifter and a full set of billet stalks. And behind the cockpit, a gigantic cargo area hangs two more speakers over a custom Audio Excellence sound bin that includes two Kole Audio amplifiers and a big JL Audio subwoofer.

The sale of this full-figured classic includes a stack of build receipts and an assortment of restoration pictures.

Restored and ready to hit the road, this awesome ’58 Chevy is the perfect place to “See the U.S.A.”. And since the car is just as useful and hard-working today as it was almost 60 years ago, it’s a fun vehicle that can easily earn its keep. There can’t be many of these stylish wagons left, and if you’re looking for a collector car that’s as functional as it is handsome, this Nomad is your hot ticket!
