Some things never go out of style, particularly 1955-57 Chevrolets. They are even more popular today than they were when they were new, and both restored and modified Shoeboxes earn everybody’s respect and admiration at shows. The best ones are those that allow the original goodness of these cars to shine through, while subtly updating them with modern performance and conveniences. This 1955 Chevy 2-door is such a car, with a very stock looking body, beautiful interior, and a powerful fuel-injected small block under the hood. If this isn’t the ideal cross-country Power Tour candidate, I can’t imagine many that would be better.

OK, so the bright orange metallic wasn’t on the 1955 Chevy color chart, but you can’t argue that it doesn’t look right on the 2-door post coupe body. This one was originally Neptune Green, but the dramatic contrast between the metallic orange and India Ivory is pure 1950s cool. These cars just lend themselves to the two-tone paint treatment, thanks to the cool body trim and contoured quarter panels. The bodywork is very good all around on this car, with straight panels, good gaps, and doors that snap closed with precision. There’s a lot of pearl in that orange paint, too, so it seems to glow from within, especially when parked in the sunlight. Nothing has been shaved, chopped, channeled, or frenched, which is always the smart choice on these cars, and instead, the builder allows the original design to speak for itself. Thanks to its exceptionally nice finish quality, this car stands apart simply by being beautifully executed rather than radically altered.

The stock approach was used on all the trim as well. The original grille and bumpers have been restored to concours condition, the original stylized jet hood ornament has been retained, and the cool rocker panel stainless, as well as the trim that separates the two colors, has been straightened and buffed to new condition. Many people think the ’55 is the best-looking of the Shoebox Chevys, and that’s because the original designers kept it simple and let the trim do the talking. New tinted glass has been installed throughout and all the lenses and emblems are new.

Mechanically, however, this car is built to drive. Forget the original stove-bolt six that was born under the hood, this car now packs a 350 cubic inch RamJet V8 that delivers performance even the top engines in 1955 couldn’t promise. As beautifully finished as the body, the engine bay sparkles with polished aluminum and chrome, all liberally applied on parts like the valve covers, accessories, brake master cylinder and booster, and even the power steering reservoir. Stainless fasteners were used for a bright custom touch, and the massive aluminum radiator is housed in its own polished aluminum shroud. A set of cast iron performance exhaust manifolds deliver horsepower without the heat and leaks of long-tube headers, and a pair of electric fans keep it cool on the hottest days, even with the A/C cranking. New wiring has been used throughout the car, and the engine bay is tidy and well-sorted, making any kind of service work a snap.

If you need more proof that this car was built for the open road, look no further than the Tremec 5-speed transmission that was installed behind the warmed-over small block. With a steep first gear and a towering overdrive, it’s snappy around town, but settles down and cruises effortlessly while pulling down decent fuel mileage. Out back, a heavy-duty Ford 9-inch will live a long and happy life. The original frame has been retained, of course, and a stock type front suspension uses dropped spindles and disc brakes for style and safety. You’ll also note that the oil pan has been modified to allow the car to use the original steering system, which is a nice touch. In back, it uses traditional leaf springs and tube shocks, with drum brakes handling the stopping. Floors are painted satin black so it’s easy to maintain and you won’t sweat it if you get caught in a surprise rain storm out on the road. The exhaust has been beautifully fabricated and ceramic coated, and features a pair of remote cut-outs that dump ahead of the mufflers, just in case you’re sick of keeping a low profile. Wheels are by Coys, with 17-inchers up front, and 18s out back, wearing 225/55/17 front and 225/60/18 rear Pirelli performance radials.

The beautiful tan ultraleather interior is highlighted by matching orange piping on the seats, as well as some modern upgrades that will enhance the driving experience. The original bench seat has been upgraded and refinished, the door panels upholstered to match, and a new headliner was installed overhead. The original dash was preserved as much as possible, painted to match the body, and stuffed with appropriately vintage-looking gauges from Classic Instruments. The 5-speed is controlled by a simple shifter topped by a white cue ball knob, and the pedals are billet aluminum. For entertainment, an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo head unit lives in the dash, and powers speakers throughout the passenger compartment. The A/C system has been cleverly integrated into the original controls, and the vents are beautifully fitted into the original metal dash, so there’s no ugly plastic box hanging underneath. The steering wheel is positively gorgeous, restored to match the bright orange body and a wonderful reminder of how stylish these cars were in 1955. You’ll also notice things like power windows, a matching clock in the original location ahead of the passenger, and seat belts for safety. In back, the trunk has been upholstered to match, with an access panel for storage in the former spare tire well, a remote-mounted battery, and a matching Chevy bow tie emblem embroidered on the rear panel.

Admit it, you love looking at this car. One, the factory stylists got it right the first time, and two, the guys who built this car left all the good stuff alone. Fun to drive, reliable, fast, and incredibly comfortable on the open road, this is as close to a no-compromises hobby car as you’re going to get. With turn-key reliability and show-stopping good looks, it’s welcome almost anywhere great cars gather, and it’s much too cool to ever sit on the back of a trailer. Drive it, enjoy it, show it, that’s what this car is all about. And I know we say it a lot, but it’s frequently true: you just couldn’t build this car yourself for the asking price. Take advantage of the opportunity, and put this ’55 Chevy in your garage. Call today!
