In the classic car hobby, you can find tons of awesome tri-fives which carry timeless style that will forever be associated with one of the greatest designs in automotive history and one of the greatest eras in American history. But as nice as those cars are, their extensive use of chrome trim and avid dedication to concours homogeny has almost become a handicap in today’s modernist hot rod culture. “Sleek” and “Contemporary” are increasingly becoming key words for most classic car builders, and that means rides like this stunning 1955 Bel Air are really starting to hit their prime. Built as a head turning classic that looks good and performs great, this cool old Chevy wraps an unconventionally loud exterior around a beefy 496 big block, a proven Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and a simple, color-keyed interior that’s complete with modern air conditioning. If you’re a fan 50s Chevrolet design, but would rather have an edgy hot rod than a chrome-laden parking lot princess, this razor-sharp resto-mod is the shining star you’ve been wishing on!

When a gearhead says the words “Sleek” and “Contemporary”, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a mirror-like coat of high quality urethane and a fully restored, arrow straight body. And naturally, being the top notch paint that it is, the DuPont Chromabase found on this Bel Air’s super straight North Carolina body displays deep reflections under a spectacular shine. Those deep reflections are the result of hours of high quality metalwork that was executed during a complete frame-off restoration. And today, this classy Chevy sedan is a fully sorted show stopper which proves just as impressive on a curvy mountain road as it does on a summer show field!

In a victorious attempt to appeal to a younger audience, Chevrolet gave their ’55 line Ferrari-inspired detailing that has become some of the most beloved car art of the past 60 years. At the front of this bright Bel Air’s profile, a trademark body-width bumper rides below a pristine stainless grille, clear parking lights and modern halogen headlamps that are lined in traditional chrome trim. At the top of that grille, a factory-fresh Chevrolet crest is centered below a new ‘jetbird’ hood ornament which looks fantastic against the car’s technically yellow paint. At the back of that hood, tinted glass rides inside new stainless trim, Rain Gear electric wipers and a stylish chrome mirror. At the base of that glass, factory optioned fender trim, sharp fender lines and subtle side pipes are accented by chrome “Chevrolet” scripts, traditional GM door handles and pristine “Bel Air” quarter emblems. And at the back of those sharp fenders, chrome-trimmed tail lights frame a second pristine Chevrolet crest above a second body-width bumper.

By now it’s probably pretty obvious this Chevy was built to be seen. But, thanks to the 496 cubic inch big block V8 under its domed hood, that might be easier said than done! At the top of the mean mill, a polished aluminum air cleaner funnels wind into a coated Demon 4-barrel that’s threaded onto polished stainless lines, high quality braided hoses and a chrome mechanical fuel pump. Below that carburetor, a high rise Holley intake props a high performance MSD distributor, which sends spark across polished looms via Accel Hi-Temp Spiral Core wires, opposite a chrome thermostat housing. At the sides of that intake, polished valve covers hang chrome Mr. Gasket breathers over aluminum Pro Topline heads and coated long tube headers. Below those heads, a Doug Herbert rotating assembly utilizes a bullet crank, JE pistons and KI Technologies race rods to create stout 9.75 to 1 compression on 93 octane pump gas. At the front of that rotating assembly, billet pulleys spin a chrome alternator and a polished Sanden AC compressor above a modern power steering pump. And in front of those pulleys, a polished Griffin radiator is centered between a polished cap, a polished overflow tank and two quick spinning pusher fans. Despite its large displacement, the big 496 fits well in this Bel Air’s clean engine compartment. And details such as body-matched fenders, a modern brake booster, two restored horns and smooth Chevrolet Orange engine paint add the kind of tailored and detailed look that creates a nice, finished appearance.

That stout big block is backed by a column shifted Cook’s Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed which sends power to a tough Ford nine inch and eager 3.50 gears. That tweaked drivetrain is housed in a completely rebuilt suspension which, along with the car’s modern power steering and power four wheel disc brakes, provides excellent handling characteristics. And that rebuilt suspension, which is fitted with a Camaro front clip, Caltracs-style traction bars and a combination of KYB and Monroe Sensatrac shocks, rides on a classic set of American Racing Torq Thrust IIs that are shod with 245/40ZR17 front and 285/40ZR17 rear Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR radials. Naturally the car’s solid floors have been restored in a smooth coat of GM satin black. Completely fresh hardware is present and accounted for from its rear-mounted stainless fuel tank to its Fatman tubular control arms. A raucous engine note is provided by a mandrel bent true dual exhaust system which breathes through giant three inch pipes and dual-chamber Flowmaster mufflers. And all this stellar hardware and expert craftsmanship adds up to one awesome, road ready classic that will provide years of carefree cruising!

Featuring an excellent mix of modern and traditional pieces, this Bel Air’s two-tone cockpit presents the kind of quality craftsmanship that separates parade cars from power tour cars. Two rows of supple bench seats are covered in soft hides that display no significant wear and feature exceptionally comfortable surfaces. Above those seats, a custom headliner frames a fully functional dome light; and below those seats, high quality carpet anchors a remote controlled JVC CD player next to striking, bowtie-branded floor mats. On the doors, color-keyed panels look great between painted frames, classic chrome handles, and traditionally sculpted armrests. There’s a curvaceous yellow dash that’s detailed with bowtie-stamped stainless, glove box-mounted accessory gauges, and controls for the car’s Vintage Air climate system. In front of the driver, a familiar Bel Air steering wheel spins a color-keyed rim around a full chrome horn ring. And behind the passengers, a bowtie-branded package tray hangs two small pillows and two chrome-grilled speakers above a custom upholstered trunk.

The sale of this fly cruiser includes an original Chevrolet warranty book, paperwork for its Vintage Air climate system and can tags for its Y5017K Spectramaster Yellow and Y5293K Off White paint.

If you’re not a big fan of the showroom-static tri-fives that dominate today’s concours events, this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air was built for you. It features serious go power under the hood, a unique and stylish interior, and a ton of high performance hardware in a car that simply can’t be duplicated for anywhere near our asking price. If you’ve been wishing for the perfect combination of classic 50s design, old school hot rod style and modern drivability, we have your next car!
