Watching award-winning customs roll through our RK Motors Charlotte showroom never gets old. But sometimes we get the feeling that the modern street rod movement has become more about flash and less about substance. After all, hot rod culture started with guys who drove their cars out of necessity, and showed them out of desire. This razor-sharp Ford, a direct result of what happens when $40K in top notch parts meets years of specialized labor, is a prime example of that ‘built-to-cruise’ mentality. And if you’re a discerning rodder who’s looking for a car that offers more than shiny chrome and bright paint, it’s your one-way ticket to bigger and better things!

Assembled from the ground up, this awesome roadster’s smooth and solid fuselage began life as high quality fiberglass that Coast to Coast Street Rods structured into a streamlined roadster. Once that body completely cured, it was fitted with an innovative hideaway roof and shipped to Extreme Customs in Temperance, Michigan. The pros at Extreme Customs added a distinct and vivid combination of Dodge Viper silver and Chevy Corvette black. And today, with nary a ripple or misaligned panel anywhere, this positively evil Ford mixes enough utility to hush old school skeptics with enough polish to be front row at the car show!

The beauty of a well-done street rod is often found in the simplicity of its execution. In a nod to the hobby’s old school hot rodding roots, the best cars are usually topped with a stripped down, all business body that emphasizes their purpose-built, high performance nature. So, when you craft a world class custom like this killer ’37 Ford, the best thing to do is let its original curves do the talking and simply enhance what’s already there. Our enhancements begin with flowing fiberglass fenders, which center a polished grille between chrome-trimmed Ford headlights. Behind that grille, a lightweight hood anchors smoked glass between elegant mirrors, optional windshield wipers and a retractable cloth top. Below that glass, shaved coach doors seal solid along smooth fiberglass running boards. Behind those boards, frenched tail lights and a polished tag bracket ride between a shaved decklid and wide exhaust tips. And overall, the car’s top notch build creates one cohesive classic that, despite significant customization, is both tasteful and easily recognized.

That cool combination of slick fiberglass and glossy pigment is certainly pretty, but now it’s time to get serious. Widely considered one of the world’s greatest powerplants, the car’s rewarrantied LS2 utilizes aluminum construction, an aggressive cam and an upgraded fuel injection system to mix hours of thrills with miles of efficiency. Up top, GM’s familiar fuel rail covers have been sufficiently replaced with polished, “LS2” branded units. The engine’s factory serpentine system remains in place for ease of maintenance and maximum performance. A polished throttle body breathes through a sleek, “LS2” branded air cleaner. There’s a polished aftermarket intake that, along with the aforementioned throttle body, jumps output to well over 400 horsepower. And modern power steering combines with factory manifolds, a beefy aluminum radiator and high quality AC Delco plug wires to detail an otherwise purpose-built performer. Aesthetically, the smooth, body-matched engine compartment plays well against the LS2’s clean, technical casting. Niceties such as a braided fuel line, carbon fiber accents and an “LS2” branded oil cap add just the right amount of flash. And the net result is a buttery, muscle-bound V8 that, through its distinctive rumble, foretells this roadster’s true hot rod nature.

Naturally, the car’s Coast to Coast body rides on a full Coast to Coast chassis that’s been assembled to exacting standards. The proven LS2 torques a tough T56 6-speed that was supplied by the same donor car. That 6-speed spins a familiar Ford 9-inch, which is fitted with 3.50 gears, a posi-traction differential and 31-spline axles. That custom drivetrain pushes a road-ready suspension, which sports power rack and pinion steering and fresh Ride Tech air components. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to power-assisted discs at all four corners. At the center of the floor, 2.5-inch true-dual exhaust breathes through throaty Magnaflow mufflers. At the corners of the chassis, Billet Specialties GS Series wheels turn 215/40R17 Fuzion ZR1s in front of 275/45R20 Fuzion ZR1s. And everything, from the car’s floor-mounted brake booster to its stainless steel fuel tank, is well-planned, well executed and ready to work its magic!

Pop this Ford’s electric doors and you’ll find a custom leather interior that was installed by the pros at Mr. Bill’s Custom Auto Interiors in Toledo, Ohio. At ground level, Camel carpet weaves a thick cover beneath color-keyed floor mats and billet foot pedals. At the center of that carpet, a leather-wrapped console founds a Hurst shifter behind modern air conditioning, buttons for the Ride Tech suspension, billet power window switches and a Sirius-capable Panasonic sound system. Above that console, a body-matched dash sports a full array of Auto Meter gauges. Seating is provided by plush, leather-wrapped buckets that feature trouble-free, manual adjustment. Above those seats, a custom headliner centers a small mirror between Cobra-style sun visors. In front of the driver, a polished and leather-wrapped steering wheel spins around a tilting Flaming River column. At the sides of the passengers, custom door panels hang billet hardware, stylish speaker grilles and sculpted armrests below Corvette black frames. And behind the cockpit, a surprisingly large trunk hangs a helpful cargo net between digital amplifiers and intricately placed wiring.

The sale of this award-winning custom includes build receipts, component manuals and a binder of pertinent notes and diagrams.

Very few street rods possess reliable, well-rounded performance to back up their extravagant appearance. Thanks to its high quality build, this stunning Ford is a great driving piece that’s fun, stylish AND reliable. Want to look good on the curb AND the street? Don’t miss your chance to land this unique drop-top!
