I know what you’re thinking… You glanced at the picture of this ’35 Vicky and immediately thought it was just another really nice fiberglass Ford that’s built for a laid back car guy and ranks of lazy summer car shows. It’s okay. Really… Since we’ve all probably seen a hundred ‘32-‘34 Fords for every one of these Chevys, it has until now, become very difficult to think outside of the box. Built for the enthusiast who wants to expand his mind past the ‘ordinary’ shapes of Ford street rods and their tongue-in-cheek Chevrolet powerplants, this stunning coupe features a show-worthy Downs fiberglass body and brilliant House Of Kolor pearl paint that’ll be right at home at those lazy summer car shows. AND, thanks to the experts at Street and Performance and the gearheads at Southern Hot Rod Interiors, it also sports a road ready chassis, a fuel injected V8 and a comfortable leather interior that make it the perfect companion for a cross-country road trip. So, if you’re looking for something that’s a bit different from a run-of-the-mill street rod, this awesome ’35 Chevy is a fantastic choice!

Downs Industries is a family owned company that has spent the last 30 years supplying the classic car hobby with some of the best fiberglass components ever produced. And with virtually no imperfections, this slick ’35 Chevy’s Downs fiberglass fuselage is a testament to exactly why they’ve enjoyed such great success. It displays smooth vertical panels which would give an all-steel car a serious run for its money, and presents an arrow straight profile that looks absolutely fantastic under a rich and glossy coat of House Of Kolor Sunset Orange Pearl. Naturally, a body this nice deserves to be seen and celebrated to the highest extent, so its expertly applied clearcoat was tirelessly wet sanded to achieve flawless reflections and then buffed to a super slick, mirror-like shine. Today, with a finish that’s as smooth as glass, tidy gaps that are fit for an OEM car, and nary a ripple or misaligned panel anywhere, this pavement pounding classic would look right at home racking up trophies at the local Goodguys meet.

When I’m at a street rod show amid the sea of brightly colored, over-the-top creations, I often find myself asking: “Was Ford the only manufacturer of pre-war American classics?” And then, seemingly out of nowhere, a refreshing piece like this well-done Chevrolet rolls through and quells any doubts I had about the segments apparent lack of variety. Wrapping a unique profile in top notch trim and intricate detail work, this awesome Vicky is a first class custom that can be driven cross-country OR shown at a national level. Up front, a pristine aluminum grille rides inside a body-matched shell which provides an excellent contrast to spotless stainless headlights. Behind that grille, a Rootlieb tilt-forward hood flows to the base of like-new smoked glass; and at the sides of that grille, a typical clean and simple profile which defines classic street rods is accented by shaved door handles, smooth, body-matched running boards and small California sport mirrors. At the top of the car, you’ll find a nicely chopped roof that, unlike its steel brethren, was designed and planned as such from the car’s inception. And out back, an interior mounted LED center high mount stop lamp rides above a flush fitting fuel filler, a familiar chrome tag bracket and a slick Lambert Enterprises LED tail light.

Once Downs prepped and completely cured this old school Chevy’s fuselage, they strapped it to a truck and sent it on its way to Street and Performance in Mena, Arkansas where it was fitted to a custom built chassis and equipped with a hot 350 cubic inch V8. At the top of that proven small block, a polished air cleaner utilizes a front mount, re-usable filter element to funnel wind into a reliable, precise and completely chromed multi-port fuel injection system. That air and fuel is then passed through high performance aluminum heads, which are fitted with polished bowtie valve covers, and ignited by bright orange Taylor wires that are snapped onto a traditional points distributor. The resultant spent gases are jettisoned through a slick set of HPC headers; and the cylinders are simultaneously cooled by a polished aluminum radiator that’s equipped with both a polished bowtie cap and a polished overflow tank. The motor keeps spinning thanks to a full set of polished pulleys which hang a chrome flex fan just in front of a chrome alternator, a polished AC compressor and a polished water pump. The compliments keep flowing thanks to a highly detailed, well-executed engine bay which is very impressive to look at. And everything from the car’s polished hood hardware and liquid filled Street and Performance fuel pressure gauge to its polished breathers and Lokar transmission dipstick is fully sorted, ready to show and ready to hit the road!

Underneath this cool cruiser you’ll find a modern chassis that’s fully sorted and ready to go! At the center of the car, a rugged GM Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed automatic transmission, which is equipped with both a chrome pan and a chrome flywheel cover, spins a chrome driveshaft that’s attached to a polished Corvette rear end and polished, color-keyed coil over shocks. At the front of the car, an easy twisting rack and pinion steering system is augmented by polished tubular control arms and two more polished, color-keyed coil over shocks. And at the corners of the car, braided brake lines shuttle fluid from a floor mounted booster and master cylinder to polished calipers and solid rotors. All this street rod’s excellent drivetrain and suspension components are bolted to a custom Street and Performance frame which is sandwiched between stainless hardware and a clean, body-matched floorpan. A killer soundtrack is provided by a 2.5 inch polished true dual exhaust system which features great sounding glasspack style mufflers and a custom center outlet. Power flows to the pavement through a sweet set of 5-spoke Coys wheels which wear 215/35 front and 255/35 rear Nitto Extreme radials. And everything from this Vicky’s finned transmission cooler to its Chevy Orange oil pan is 100% detailed and ready for show.

Grab the Dakota Digital key fob and pop open this awesome Chevy’s lightweight doors to find a spectacular tan leather interior which is definitely one of the main highlights of the car. Plush, two-tone seats prop gold detail buttons next to a custom, leather wrapped center armrest. At the sides of those seats sculpted leather door panels that are equipped with billet door handles and displayed via polished prop rods, perfectly complement custom leather side panels which are complete with both built in courtesy lights and great sounding speakers. Below those seats, like-new tan carpet anchors a custom short console which includes billet cup holders, billet courtesy lights, buttons for the car’s power windows and controls for a Vintage Air climate system next to billet foot pedals and color-keyed floor mats. In front of those seats, a leather wrapped dash hangs a full set of VDO white face gauges between billet vents, an MP3 compatible Sony Xplod CD player and a leather trimmed windshield. And above those seats, a custom headliner begins at a stylish billet aluminum rearview mirror and flows all the way back to the car’s smoked rear window. At the back of the cockpit, a custom storage compartment features a trick backlit Chevy bowtie. And in front of the driver, a chrome Ididit tilt steering column spins a color keyed Lecarra half-wrap steering wheel around a full set of billet stalks and an attractive chrome gear indicator.

Included with the sale of this vivid street rod is a certificate of manufacture from Downs Industries, a small stack of component manuals, and a few receipts for work performed by the car’s current owner.

Professionally built at a cost that would probably double our asking price, this slick ’35 Chevrolet Vicky is simply spectacular in person. And with its top notch craftsmanship and roster of fully sorted performance components, it’s ready to hit the road tomorrow. If your fashion tastes run more towards bowties, this is your kind of rod!
