If you're a fan of style, speed and comfort, you simply can't go wrong with Pontiac's storied GTO. The goat practically defined the golden age of Detroit, and by the time its first production run was over, it had become the best-selling muscle car of all time. Not surprisingly, demand for these cornerstone classics continues to be strong. The product of an extensive frame-off restoration, this 1965 GTO drop-top is one of the nicest GTO's to sit under our showroom lights. With its Tri-power drivetrain and desirable burgundy on parchment color combination, it's the perfect car for anyone who cruises fast, wide and loud. And if you're searching for an investment grade classic that'll roll straight out of the showroom and right onto the red carpet, it's the opportunity of a lifetime!

But before we get too far let's decode the VIN and fender tag.

VIN: 237675P173746

• 2 – Pontiac
• 37 – Tempest Le Mans
• 67 – 2-door convertible
• 5 – 1965
• P – Pontiac, MI assembly plant
• 173746 – basic production number

And now for the fender tag:

• 01A: 1st week of January 1965 build date
• 65-23767: 1965 Pontiac 2-door convertible Le Mans
• PON: Pontiac, Michigan assembly plant
• 3614: Production number
• Trim: 213B – Black vinyl interior
• Paint: N-1 – Burgundy
• L: 4-speed floor shift
• G: Console
• P: radio
• 5N: GTO option (PON/KC plants only)

Only trailered 200 shake-out miles since its extensive restoration in 2011, it shows as if the restoration was finished yesterday. The burgundy is flawless and when you glance inside, it's hard to argue with the decision to convert it over to white interior. The lines are crisp and straight and panel gaps are measured and consistent. When the weather outside gets frightening, a taut white top comes to the rescue keeping the elements out while adding a final element of quality to the exterior.

Tough, understated and attractive, this GTO perfectly defines Pontiac's lasting legacy of tempering sophistication with aggression. The front of the car is dominated by trademark, stainless-trimmed grilles that are anchored between stacked headlights, a pristine, satin-finish arrowhead and a broad chrome bumper. Inside those grilles, a prominent “G T O” emblem hints at the performance bolted beneath a new-for-1965, GTO-exclusive hood scoop. At the sides of that scoop, expressive 'coke bottle' fenders hang dent-free wheel trim and arrow-straight rocker guards around familiar GM door handles. On the outside of those fenders, bright GTO crests combine with black “G T O” scripts to create visual sizzle that matches the car's visceral thrill. Above those crests, Soft Ray glass combines with brand new stainless and a correct chrome mirror to highlight the car's super clean profile. And behind that glass, a second chrome bumper hangs small reverse lamps below a finned valence, an ominous “G T O” badge, a second arrowhead and appropriately centered “PONTIAC” lettering that lets everyone know EXACTLY who outran them.

Lift the hood to find GTO power in the form of a date-code correct 360hp 389ci V8. The powerful mill is branded with a 9778789 casting code, a WS code stamped under the passenger side cylinder head, and a L94 (December 9th, 1964) casting date in the distributor valley. The date matches the car's early January build date well. Topped with a correct Tri-Power setup, it spins to life easily and idles with none of the fussiness that other multi-carburetor engines seem to experience. The carb linkage swivels like it's lined with silk, and the engine pulls the relatively lightweight GTO with real authority. This engine left the factory as a true tri-power and has the PHS documents to prove it. Of course, the entire engine bay has been restored and detailed for show, including Pontiac Turquoise on the block. Correct chrome valve covers and air cleaners definitely add some sparkle. Lift the engine's hood at any car show and you're sure to have a huge crowd around your car in no time.

Logging just over 200 miles since its noble rebirth, this goat's subdued floors and straight frame are completely free of any issues or defects. The stout 389 sends power to a Muncie 4-speed That grinds power to a GM 10-bolt, which spins a Safe-T-track 3.90 differential. At the sides of that rock-solid drivetrain, true-dual exhaust pipes connect the car's manifolds with Z-force mufflers. At the sides of that booming soundtrack, a professionally restored suspension is complete with manual steering and big drum brakes. At the corners of that suspension, a quartet of 15” Hurst rims spin Firestone rubber.

If you were paying attention you probably noticed that this car originally left the factory with a black vinyl interior, but during its extensive frame off restoration the owner decided to go with a white or parchment vinyl interior to accent the burgundy exterior. Open the doors and you'll see the stylish diagonal pattern that is unique to the GTO and the symmetry of the seats in this car is the result of careful fitting and lots of extra time spent during final assembly. With the same kind of styling as the rear valence, the center console is beautifully finished, offering storage space and easy access to the Hurst 4-speed with cue ball shifter. A hood tach wasn't available in 65, but this one offers a set of crisply detailed in-dash gauges, including the tachometer and checkered flag speedometer. On the floor, new carpet anchors the chrome Hurst shifter and black, Pontiac-branded floor mats. At the sides of the car, fresh door panels hang chrome handles and bright GTO crests. In front of the driver, a steering wheel spins a wood rim around a Turquoise, Pontiac-branded horn button.

The sale of this immaculate GTO includes Pontiac Historic Service documents, receipts for engine and transmission rebuilds, and restoration photos.

This iconic burgundy GTO is an ideal blend of performance and style. The car's an absolute pleasure to drive; and with its killer good looks, it'll win trophies and turn heads seven days a week. If you're looking for the opportunity to pick up a high quality muscle car to enjoy for years to come, here's your chance!
