Over the past few years, we've certainly seen some very nice classics. But this 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe, with its tweaked flathead and solid, all-steel body, is definitely one of the coolest! Fully sorted and ready to hit the road, this clean convertible combines the all-day streetability of Dearborn's best touring cars with vintage Detroit style that's classy enough to lead a parade. And today, thanks to a high quality restoration, not only is it a reliable and exceptionally comfy place to spend a sightseeing summer, it's also an authentic piece of Americana that'll be welcomed at virtually any show in any town. If you're looking for a classic that's as alluring as it is powerful, who says you need a high maintenance muscle car? This awesome drop-top will look just as cool rolling down the road, show just as well at the local drive in and provide just as many miles of carefree cruising!

Unlike many wartime offerings, this nostalgic Ford appears to have been restored with a healthy respect for originality. That restoration, conducted in 2007 by Bob Kennedy, started with rust-free California metal which was stripped bare. When that metal was sanded into conservative and classy body lines, fresh Maize Yellow two-stage was raised to a smooth, wet-looking shine. And the result is a super cool boulevard queen that instantly pops, both inside and out, while inspiring warm feelings of thoroughbred Americana.

Without question, aesthetics is what draws almost everyone to this Ford; in fact, it's a large part of what originally made the car such a huge sales success. And naturally, the restorers retained Dearborn's classic profile by abstaining from any sort of chopping, sectioning or frenching. Up front, a re-chromed bumper anchors a 'winged' and Ford-branded grille between clear parking lamps and NOS headlights. Above that grille, a blue-tinged hood topper perfectly complements a detailed “SUPER DELUXE 8” emblem while stainless wipers foot like-new glass beneath a tan power top. At the sides of that 'blue mascot', 'flat' stainless trim camouflages sleek door handles behind an optional spotlight and chrome driver's mirror. And at the back of the car, streamlined tail lamps reflect a “FORD” branded trunk above a second re-chromed bumper and “Ford” branded exhaust tip.

Henry Ford revolutionized the automotive industry, but it's his venerable V8 that continues to make the biggest impression on serious collectors and hardcore hot rodders. As you might imagine, this clean drop-top is powered by a 239 cubic inch 69A flathead that, from the factory, twists an even 100 horsepower into 180 lb./ft. of butter-smooth torque. Completely overhauled in 2007, the throaty mill growls thanks to a roster of high quality parts that includes new valves, Johnson lifters and aftermarket aluminum heads. Fires are lit by braided and coated plug wires, which source spark from a Ford battery and authentic 6-volt generator. Fuel and air mix in a small Ford carburetor, which is sandwiched between a factory intake and glossy oil bath air cleaner. Aesthetically, the mill, which perches a correct oil canister above correct cast iron exhaust manifolds, has been painted a traditional blue hue. Cool details like Ford-branded belts, a glass fuel bowl and reproduction Ford hoses up the authenticity ante. And overall, the car's Maize and black engine bay is clean, fully-sorted and ready to rumble.

Despite its thoughtfully upgraded powerplant, not much has changed under this Super DeLuxe's clean and solid and floors. There's a heavy duty frame and factory-accurate suspension that was wired with new fuel lines, fitted with fresh friction shocks and veiled in a subdued coat of Satin Black paint. A correct 3-speed manual still proves 'simple is good' by doing an excellent job of spinning an authentic, banjo-style rear end. In front of that gearbox, a beam axle and transverse leaf spring, an innovation heavily touted by '30s-era Ford execs, free up much needed interior space. Behind that gearbox, a second leaf and second solid axle help set the car on its way. At the corners of the floors, 4-wheel drum brakes provide slow and steady stops. At the center of the floors, a low maintenance, single-pipe exhaust system employs a subdued turbo muffler. And everything rolls on painted and pinstriped wheels, which spin 6.00-16 Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewalls around slim trim rings and “FORD” branded center caps.

Climb inside the airy cockpit and you'll find a fully restored interior which mixes uptown class with blue collar roots. At the front of the car, a streamlined and color-keyed dash hangs gold-trimmed gauges above a vintage radio, correct foot pedals and an optional heater. At the center of the car, leather and cloth seats feel more comfortable than their look implies. And at the bottom of the car, dark gray carpet is of a much higher ilk than the stuff found in today's typical showroom fodder. In front of the driver, a “Ford” branded steering wheel spins a body-matched rim and chrome horn ring around a correct shifter and retro turn signal indicator. At the sides of the driver, simple door panels hang small armrests below chrome hardware and wood-themed toppers. And behind the driver, a cavernous trunk hides a full-size spare tire.

When it comes to maximizing the amount of car your money buys, you simply can't go wrong with a fully sorted cruiser. And, thanks to its thorough restoration, this all-steel Ford is a great driving piece that's fun, historic AND reliable. If you're looking for a stylish classic that commands respect on both the boulevard and the show field, this clean Super DeLuxe is just your style!
