If green is the color of envy, you might as well be staring at something beautiful, and this gorgeous ’68 GTO is certainly an object of desire. PHS certified, numbers matching and done extremely well that beauty is more than skin deep!

Open the hood to see the freshly and thoroughly detailed engine compartment. We pulled the original motor, resealed it and bathed it in fresh Pontiac Blue. Every bracket was blasted clean and refinished. We detailed the inner fenderwells, core support, firewall and more. New chrome valve covers and the air cleaner add sparkle to the black compartment. We went through the complete A/C system, installing new hoses, a new accumulator, a remanufactured compressor, all seals and more. We charged it up with R134a and it blows COLD. We detailed the power brake booster and added a remanufactured master cylinder. There’s a new wiring harness in place, a reproduction cap on the recored radiator and new hoses with tower hose clamps. New belts, new wires, fresh plugs, new filters and more mean the maintenance has been done for the year.

The original code XM 400 2bbl motor grew a correct 4bbl manifold and carb for a bit more power and flexibility. Since this was originally a California car (born in Fremont and sold new at Hockett Motor Sales in Grass Valley) we’re inclined to think this was built as a fuel saver—the standard 400 took premium while this one took regular. The options make it a real cruiser—power steering, power brakes, A/C, comfy buckets—you’d drive the wheels off of it, too!

Look over the deep green exterior. The gold metal flake in the paint is ALWAYS dull on old paint jobs but sparkles like liquid sunshine when fresh. The body is in excellent shape, free of dings, dents or ripples. The paint is smooth and flat, just as you’d expect of its recent restoration. Rally II wheels with radial redlines take the place of the disc wheel covers and whitewalls, and the car is all the better for it. The Endura front bumper, so frequently cracked and warped, is nearly perfect here. Stainless trim pieces are mainly original to the car and are in great shape. The white convertible top is brand new and operates exactly as it should. The decals are new, the grille is close to perfect and chrome parts from the door handles to the rear bumper sparkle!

Underneath the key word is “clean.” From the floorpans to the exhaust to the steering and suspension this chassis is well sorted, tidy and largely new. Steering and brake components are newer and adjusted precisely. The original transmission is in excellent shape after its recent rebuild. In keeping with its cruiser attitude the exhaust rumbles without being overbearing. The trunk is in the same condition: A new trunk mat, spare cover, the correct jack and spare make their homes inside while leaving plenty of room for car show supplies!

Finished in a very attractive green-tinted gold the interior perfectly compliments the exterior’s gold-tinted green hue. Far from ordinary, the upholstery shimmers from within like gold cadmium. There are rebuilt seats with new covers, new carpeting, a new dash pad, the clean original center console and mint door panels. The dash panels, both chrome and woodgrain, are brand new. Clean gauges work as they should. We sent our restoration shop into detailing this cabin, and they did their usual bang-up job!

We have a stack of restoration receipts with parts and services large and small. This was a clean car with a beautiful paint job that simply needed a lot of detailing—it’s done now and the car’s amazing!
