Magazine Featured Custom Rat Rod Truck 454 V8 Automatic Air Ride
Throughout the last decade the classic car scene has experienced a monumental shift toward extreme form and modern function. Some say it's a result of enthusiasts having less resources. Some cite the influx of younger generations. And some attribute the change to simple boredom. A big driver of that transition has been the Rat Rod craze. Love 'em or hate 'em, one thing is for sure: these wicked cool creations ALWAYS turn heads. And if you've grown weary of the seemingly endless barrage of cruisers and muscle cars parading through your favorite car show, this innovative Chevy is a first class ticket to rustic romanticism!
ROTH WOULD BE PROUD!
A case study in the lifetime dependability of choice American metal, this 3100 was never meant to be a slammed trendsetter. But THAT, our friends, is the very essence of the truck's build! Weathered but solid, this Rat's traditional cab was chopped five inches, sectioned four inches and fitted with custom rear glass. Opposite that lite, an exaggerated visor shades a cranking windshield, a monochromatic mirror and amber cowl lamps. Just behind those lamps, traditional door handles pop trick suicide doors, which swivel toward a narrowed bed. That wood-lined plane is finished with retro tools and functional vintage fuel canisters that, plumbed to a common line, actually power the truck's engine. At the back of those antiqued planks, trick turn signals join carefully weathered LED taillights to illuminate repurposed fencing that serves as a stylish bumper. Speaking of repurposed, the build's original Comp Thumpr cam, accented with more recycled fence caps, leads a fancy grille and retro Chevrolet Twilite headlamps. And everything pops thanks to warm embellishments that came straight from the hand of Bluzman Pinstriping's Kirk James.
MONSTER POWER
Plenty of power is provided by 454 cubic inches of modern Chevrolet big block that, in addition to being professionally rebuilt by New York's Eric's Automotive Machine Shop, has been carefully weathered through scuffing and acid washing. Revs are created when vintage scoops float wind into a hot Rochester tri-power set-up, which sports creative worm lines that are a nice nod to traditional moonshiners. Those carbs ride a custom adapter plate, which makes room for an exceptionally rare Oberhausen electric blower that's been fully updated with 12-volt wiring. A Delco-Remy HEI distributor shoots spark through loomed Accel Hi-Temp Super Stock Radio Suppression cables. Cleanly weathered valve covers cap iron heads and an iron block, both speckled with familiar Chevy Orange paint. An efficient aluminum radiator plays well with a big electric puller fan. A short V-belt spins a traditional water pump beside a modern alternator. Everything breathes through internally restricted Zoomies. And cool details include a vintage horn, a bright Equus tach, a retro Carter fuel bowl, a repurposed Quaker State expansion tank and a sweet Marshalltown vacuum gauge.
ROLLING ART
Park this Chevy on a lift and take a close look at all the hours of sweat and innovation it takes to successfully pull off Ramshackle Chic. It all starts behind the fully sorted engine, where a proven Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed deals power to a familiar GM 10-bolt. The aforementioned cab, channeled two inches, rides a boxed chassis that's been Z'd eight inches up front and nine inches out back. Those bones easily blend old and new, with adjustable air bags joining old school lever shocks, fabricated control arms and radically reworked springs. Stops comes courtesy of power-assisted drums, which drain a floor-mount booster. Everything gets pushed by 10.00-15 Firestone Dragsters, which lap capped steelies. And those blades, custom-fabricated to align perfectly with predictable wires, help point 4.75/5.00-19 Firestone whitewalls.
GET LOW
Swing the doors and you'll find a tasteful custom interior that continues this Rat's theme of combining maximum style with maximum usability. Custom fabricated and carefully weathered seats sport Rat Fink-themed leather that, you guessed it, is custom to this application. Those buckets, complemented by a vintage fire extinguisher and independent headrests, front a pinstriped dash that's devoid of everything but temp, voltage and oil pressure telemetry. A custom floor centers an exaggerated shifter between a vintage flashlight, leather door pulls and traditional door handles. The driver grabs a skull knuckle buster to spin a quick-release steering wheel. And a vintage Jas P. Marsh pressure gauge keeps an eye on the bags.
Perpetually cool and visually stunning, this awesome Chevy is a refreshing take on the classic truck concept. Combining top-notch innovation with proven mechanicals, it presents the rare opportunity to land a truly unique classic that easily doubles as a well-oiled cruiser. Don't miss your chance to own this killer custom!
