Description

Chevrolet obviously did a lot right in 1969. Almost everything the company produced that year has achieved a wide following that carries timeless appeal across several generations. Among those offerings, the '69 Camaro claims one of the largest enthusiast groups. That's why cars like this MacNeish-certified L78 Super Sport never stick around our showroom for very long. The beneficiary of a detailed, ground-up restoration, this fully documented stunner features a correct big block, an original Muncie 4-speed, and correct Black and Garnet aesthetics. That means, if you're looking for top-of-the-line performance that's wrapped in legendary paint and premium trimmings, this super sweet F1 literally represents the best of everything!

ALL-AMERICAN AESTHETICS

As diehard Camaro enthusiasts probably already know, most L78 Camaros were ordered as factory-spec drag cars. That means the option sheet usually didn't include a long list of power-robbing luxuries. However, this Camaro, produced on May 12th of 1969 and sold through Tamson Chevrolet in Danville, Virginia, is the literal exception to that rule. A life-long resident of Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina, it features desirable additions like a Deluxe Interior, power steering and 4-pack accessory gauges. Upon this Chevy's relocation to North Carolina, it benefitted from a detailed nut-and-bolt restoration that was completed in early 2018. Once unbolted from its subframe, this Chevy's clean body was stripped to bare metal. Thanks to the foresight of the original owner and his choice to have the undercarriage coated by Ziebart, the stripping process revealed a very solid sheetmetal foundation that required minimal work to bring back to rust-free condition. That carefully worked profile looks fantastic under correct Garnet Red 2-stage. And, as if a cherry version of one of Chevrolet's most cherry muscle cars just wasn't good enough, this classic looks even sweeter under painted Super Sport stripes.

With balanced proportions and modernist detailing, the first-generation Camaro is an inherently good-looking design. At the front of this F1, an NOS grille hangs a bold “SS” emblem between a polished bumper, clear parking lamps, NOS headlight bezels and a correct D80 chin spoiler. At the top of that grille, a chrome-trimmed Super Sport Hood bridges the gap between a familiar “Camaro BY CHEVROLET” header and Pilkington etched LOF date-coded tinted glass that's traced in straight stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, correct mirrors and traditional door handles reflect tasteful rocker spears, optional quarter louvers and ornate fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a Satin Black valance centers a fourth “SS” emblem between chrome-trimmed taillights, a guarded bumper and a correct D80 deck spoiler.

EXCLUSIVE POWER

If you know bowtie history, you know that only 4,889 of all 206,837 1969 Camaros were gifted with Chevrolet's lethal L78 396. These cars were the true performers of the Camaro world, often screaming up dragstrips and beating their way through daily stoplight squabbles. That said, living a fast life often foreshadows a fast demise, and, like many of its L78 brethren, this Camaro's original big block clocked out long before the car's spotless restoration. But alas, that's just another example of how this particular classic shines, since a proper, date-correct “JH” block was sourced and professionally rebuilt by Concord, North Carolina's KT Engine Development. Oxygen and fuel enter the big mill's combustion chambers through a polished air cleaner, stainless fluid lines and a trusty Holley carburetor. Below that carb, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange paint covers the block from its correct Winters intake all the way to its stamped steel oil pan. At the back of that intake, a reliable points distributor shoots spark through eight Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, correct cast iron heads center chrome valve covers on professionally restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those tubes, original deep-groove pulleys spin a rebuilt alternator opposite correct power steering. At the front of that pump, a Delco-topped battery complements a re-cored Harrison radiator that's cinched to pliable GM hoses and tight tower clamps. Those components are, in traditional fashion, seated in a slick, Satin Black frame. That pigment is dotted with world class detailing, like an original brake booster, correct emissions equipment and phosphate-coated hood hardware. And, with the help of a factory-spec Comp solid lifter cam, the hot V8 easily sprinted past 431 horsepower and 439 lb./ft. of torque during its 5,500 RPM dyno pulls.

TIMELESS DRIVABILITY

Under this impressive F-Body you'll find a fully sorted chassis that, like the car's glossy exterior and lust worthy engine, has been restored to very high standards. At the center of the original floors, an original 4-speed hangs a Muncie (P) M21 (B) built on April (D) 29th (29) 1969 (9) assembly stamp in front of a matching 642433 partial VIN and correct 3925660 casting number. That original transmission utilizes an original Hurst shifter to twist an original 12-bolt axle, which spins a correct posi-traction differential and correct 3.73 gears beneath a correct, “BU”-led assembly stamp. That stellar drivetrain pushes a factory-spec suspension, which cages original 5-leaf springs in correct power steering and correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through fresh pipes to a correct, transversely mounted muffler. Power meets the pavement through attractive Rally Wheels, which twist FR70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports that were sourced directly from Coker Tire. And, naturally, all the car's weathered bits were replaced during its extensive rebuild.

DELUXE APPEAL

Grab this Chevy's doors and you'll find a correct Deluxe Interior that wraps requisite bucket seats in a sea of vintage flash. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash hangs fully rebuilt telemetry, complete with an original 6,000 RPM tachometer, above an old school Delco radio. Below that dash, a correct console founds correct 4-pack accessory gauges in front of a polished Hurst selector. Opposite that console, Deluxe side panels trace chrome handles in straight stainless trim. Those components are framed in tight carpet, tough floor mats and a fade-free headliner. The driver plots a course through an original Rosewood steering wheel. And the passengers stash essentials in a fully restored trunk that features a correct jack and full-size spare tire.
