Frame Off Built Olds Slant Back Custom Streetrod 455 Olds V8 TH400 AC Leather
When it comes to polished customs, the collector car world has plenty of nice classics – especially early thirties and early forties offerings. But for every Henry Ford design that's gifted a Mustang II front-clip and small block Chevy power, the spice and variety that made this era the first golden age of performance drifts one page further into history. Thankfully, there are still cars like this stunning '47 Olds that remind us just how great EVERY American automaker was at the twilight of hot rodding. Powered by a legendary 455, backed by a rugged Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and dressed in opulent Jet Black paint, this stunning Series 66 epitomizes understated American elegance. And if you're looking for a near-perfect cruiser that puts a new shine on old school ambition, they simply don't get nicer!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Approaching this beauty, it's difficult not to be taken with its killer profile. Larger than your average street rod, this sleek sedanette began life as an upper class commuter that was likely enjoyed by an upper middle class family. During a detailed, body-off restoration, the car's slant-back profile was stripped, carefully sanded and bathed in a fresh layer of rich 2-stage. And that pigment was finished in a roster of stylish mods and tasteful factory trim. Those accoutrements kick off with a guarded bumper, which founds a timelessly unique grille beneath a colorful hood emblem and frenched '52 Merc headlights that are upgraded with dual-mode, tri-bar internals. Above that emblem, a red-tinged topper rides a peaked hood, which founds lightly tinted glass behind polished wipers, polished frames and a trick hot rod mirror. Beneath those frames, shaved doors split the difference between factory spears, factory fender shields and billet, “455” branded rocker guards. And behind those shields, a shaved decklid shades mirrored tail pipes, a mirrored bumper and frenched '46 Chevy taillights that have been upgraded with bright LEDs.
ENGINE
I bet you clicked this listing expecting another polished street rod that, like the rows of red and yellow Fords at the car show, features some form of standard Chevy power. Not hardly! How about authentic Oldsmobile power? How about 455 cubic inches of authentic Oldsmobile power? That's right, under this custom's long hood, you'll find a massaged Rocket monster block that's poised to provide excellent motivation. Pert throttle response comes courtesy of a coated Quick Fuel 4-barrel, which pipes wind from a pinstriped Caddy air cleaner to a polished Edelbrock TORKER 455 intake. That plane centers small temp and oil pressure gauges between Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, which are dressed in polished Mondello valve covers and a polished Edelbrock oil cap. At the sides of those heads, stainless Mondello long-tubes frame loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires, which sequence fire from a quality Mallory distributor and chrome-sleeved coil. In front of those wires, billet pulleys spin modern power steering beneath a chrome AC compressor, a coated water pump and a chrome GM alternator. In front of that high-amp generator, a reliable Walker radiator floats water between a polished expansion tank and an electric puller fan. And items like braided fluid lines, trick dipsticks, a Lokar throttle linkage and a polished brake booster add heavy doses of form and function.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Toss this Olds on a lift and you'll find solid floorpans that frame a carefully modified chassis in the clean sheen of Satin Black paint. Behind the torquey big block, a proven Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed twists power to a custom Fearless Gear nine that, thanks to 31-spline axles, is capable of handling 1,000 horsepower. Beneath that drivetrain, a completely rebuilt suspension employs a custom, powder-coated rear-clip behind a Fat Man independent front-half, which stacks chrome control arms on power rack-and-pinion steering. Those sturdy bones are augmented with adjustable air bags at all four corners. A traditional combination of disc and drum brakes provides quick, drama-free stops. Charred dinosaurs float from the aforementioned headers in to 2.5-inch pipes, which hang polished Magnaflow mufflers in front of polished stainless tips. Torque transitions to pavement through chrome Coys wheels, which spin 225/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 255/35ZR20 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. And everything from the car's finned transmission cooler to its stainless fuel tank is solid, fully sorted and ready to cruise.
INTERIOR
Check inside this sedan and you'll find a supple ultraleather cockpit that, despite being custom, looks as timeless as original factory fodder. Power-operated buckets, swiped from a late-model Lexus, look great in front of a re-wrapped factory bench. A classy dash hangs custom-seated Classic Instruments telemetry opposite Vintage Air conditioning and a custom glove box door. In front of that dash, a small consolette founds dual cupholders and a second billet door under a Kenwood CD player that bumps through six speakers. Beneath that island, rich carpet floats color-keyed mats under billet foot pedals and custom door panels. And in front of the driver, a billet, banjo-style steering wheel laps a tilting Ididit column.
