BODYWORK/TRIM
Designed and built at Tony's Kustoms in Lenoir City, Tennessee, this freshly finished Impala does an excellent job of wrapping vintage style around modern technology. In what amounted to a systematic, no-expense-spared rebuild, the car's solid body was completely stripped, thoroughly massaged and layered in a liquid-smooth coat of bright red 2-stage. With that paint buffed to brilliance, new glass was complemented with new, professionally polished trim and color-keyed quarter banners. With that profile dyed and detailed, "Steve Holcomb of Knoxville's Pro Auto Interior custom-stitched a tight cloth top":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcejH6cJnAs And in late 2015, this triple-red Chevy stormed the street rod scene, immediately earning a Staff Pick at the Goodguys 22nd Southeastern Nationals!
ENGINE
Toss the car's long hood and you'll find a hot LS3 small block that, thanks to Lloyd Sanders of Sanders Performance, looks ALMOST as good as it runs! GM Powertrain invested a great deal of time and research into getting the most out of its Gen IV V8, and it definitely shows. Changes started with a 20% stronger casting, featuring an increased bore of 103.25mm. Focus was then shifted to flow efficiency, resulting in the use of an all-new intake manifold and L92 rectangle-port heads. Factor in a new piston design, and injectors borrowed from the brutal LS7, and you get a very potent track weapon that happily doubles as an everyday commuter. At the top of the block, a conical, chrome-trimmed filter element funnels wind in to a polished air tube, which is hooked to a factory throttle body. At the sides of that throttle body, coated Street & Performance shorties bend under high quality Taylor plug wires. In front of those headers, an aftermarket serpentine drive spins a polished alternator and polished AC compressor behind a plethora of polished pulleys. In front of that drive, a polished PRC radiator swirls coolant around a fabricated expansion tank and big SPAL puller fan thanks to corrugated hoses. A Fastech Motorsports tune combines with Street & Performance wiring and an American Autowire harness to ensure everything communicates well. And details, like braided fluid lines, color-keyed dipsticks, a fully finished engine bay and cool, vintage-look fuel rail covers, ensure the mill maintains first class presentation.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Park this Chevy on a lift and you'll find a super clean undercarriage that's been prepped, primped and polished to match the car's slick powerplant and stunning exterior. The well-mannered motor twists a modern 6L80 6-speed, which is hooked to a tough Strange 9-inch that's fitted with an Eaton Truetrac differential and fun, 3.55 gears. That Strange pumpkin is an integral part of an Art Morrison GT Sport chassis, which features Strange coil-over-shocks at all four corners. Detroit Speed power rack-and-pinion steering provides tracking. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to 4 and 6-piston Wilwood calipers, which utilize a Wilwood master cylinder and Wilwood proportioning valve to squeeze 13-inch slotted rotors. A custom exhaust system routes spent gases through throaty Magnaflow mufflers that pop and crackle just like vintage hardware. Stylish Billet Specialties wheels throw torque through 225/45ZR18 and 275/35ZR20 Continental ExtremeContact DWS. And everything, from the car's body-matched floors to its Rock Valley fuel tank, is well planned, exceptionally executed and ready to reflect!
INTERIOR
But the show doesn't stop there. Not by a long shot! When you pop this drop-top's doors, you'll find a custom leather cockpit that, like the car's top, was installed by Steve Holcomb of Knoxville's Pro Auto Interior. Top dead center, a body-matched dash hangs clean Classic Instruments gauges above MP3-compatible Custom Autosound audio. Opposite that dash, four silver-piped seats frame a custom, full-length console that balances a modern shifter between Vintage Air climate control and switches for the aforementioned top and Nu-Relics power windows. Beneath that console, clean California Carpet bleeds in to custom side panels that are detailed with custom brightwork. In front of the driver, a tilting Ididit steering column spins a reduced diameter wheel. And behind the passengers, a leather-lined trunk features ample storage space.
