15,485 Actual Mile Callaway Corvette 350 V8 Twin Turbo
From 1987 to 1991 there was no more feared Corvette then the special edition twin-turbo Callaway Corvette. Chevrolet offered the twin-turbo Callaway as Regular Production Option (RPO) B2K code and could be ordered from select dealers in the US. Corvette orders for the B2K option were shipped directly from the Bowling Green assembly plant to Callaway Cars in Old Lyme, Connecticut, for the twin-turbo conversion. This marked the only time in Chevrolet history where GM allowed a factory-ordered non-GM performance enhancement on the Corvette.
This conversion brought not only the styling that can only be seen on the Callaway, but also nearly 400 horsepower created from the mighty twin turbo 5.7L power plant. Amazingly, only 400 of these unique rides were produced in '88 mostly because the B2K option brought with it a hefty $25,895 price tag. This incredibly well preserved '88 Callaway Corvette includes the B2K package that was performed after the original sale of this '88 Corvette. But before we get to far lets look at how highly optioned this car is:
• AC1 – Power passenger seat
• AC3 – Power driver seat
• AQ9 – Sports seats, leather
• BGR – Bowling Green Assembly
• B3W – Advance price sheet
• B4P – Radiator boost fan
• C68 – Electronic air conditioning control
• DL8 – Twin remote heated mirrors
• D7C - Speedometer driven gear 25513045
• D74 – Illuminated driver vanity mirror
• D9A – Speedometer sensor 250077224
• E5Z – Delete speedometer adaptor
• E9Z – Delete speedometer key
• FG3 – Delco-Bilstein shock absorbers
• GU2 – rear axle 2.73
• KC4 – Engine oil cooler
• K68 – 105 amp generator
• L98 – 5.7L V8 TPI
• MD8 – Automatic 4-speed transmission
• MX0 – Automatic transmission with Overdrive
• NA5 – Federal emission system requirements
• QA1 – Styled aluminum wheels 17 X 9.5”
• UQ4 – Delco Bose four speaker system
• UU8 – Delco Bose stereo system
• V01 – Heavy duty radiator
• V73 – Vehicle statement certification, US or Canada
• XAU – Front tire 275/40 ZR17
• YAU – Rear tire P275/40 ZR17
• Z52 – Sport handling package
• 1AZ – Modification stock order or order sold
• 60I – Saddle interior trim
• 602 – Saddle leather
• 609 – Saddle safety belts
• 67T – Saddle vinyl convertible top
• 74U – Dark red metallic
Showing just over 15,000 original miles, the body of this Corvette looks immaculate! Covered in a 74U Dark Red Metallic, the body features a few touches throughout that separate it from the typical '88 Corvette. On the very tip of the nose, the words Callaway Corvette are separated by a small Chevy emblem. Above the emblem are four additional openings for air to enter and cool the highly tuned power plant that waits under the hood. The nose quickly transitions to the hood, where the hideaway headlights give the entire front end a sleek look. A slight hood scoop gives the hood a menacing look, while slats on the sides of the hood allow the heat to escape from within the engine bay. The Corvette has the option of being a convertible with a tan soft top or, for those cold evenings, a hard top is also included in the sale. Regardless of what you choose, this C4 backs up its monstrous power numbers with a body that is as sleek as it is aggressive.
The B2K package took the standard '88 Corvette and made it one of the wildest sports cars of its time. After driving the Callaway Corvette, famed LeMans racer Derek Bell was quoted as saying “The power delivery is phenomenal… I've never driven street car like this.” Lift the hood forward on this Corvette and you'll reveal the original twin-turbo 5.7L L98 that rests within the engine bay. The twin-turbo addition would give a net horsepower rating of 382 horsepower and a nearly unbelievable 562 lb/ft of torque. At the top of the block is the tuned port injection wearing the Callaway logo and flanked on either side by two massive Callaway intercoolers. Thanks to the impressive engineering, this C4 is capable of doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds!
Bolted to the original L98 is the original MD8 coded 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear axle complete with GU2 coded 2.73 gears. The Corvette came with 2 suspension upgrade options, the Z-51 and the Z-52 option. The Z-51 was a competitive style suspension that made for a stiffer ride but made cornering a dream. The Z-52 was a relatively new upgrade that blended comfort with sport. The results were phenomenal and many magazines preferred the Z52 to the Z51. This '88 Callaway comes with the Z-52 upgrade to achieve a stunning blend of comfort and cornering. Up front you'll find a thicker front anti-roll bar, Delco/Bilstein gas charged shocks and a 13.0:1 steering gear. At the corners you'll find power disc brakes, and in front of those brakes you'll find QA1 optioned styled aluminum rims that have been wrapped in BF Goodrich rubber.
Inside the 2-seater features luxurious saddle tan leather interior that is more comfortable then some of the modern day Corvettes we have seen roll through our showroom. Both the driver and passenger seats are power adjustable and are a wonderful place to log miles from. Stick the key in the ignition and you'll see the dash light up with a completely digital display that is so wonderfully 80's. A unique feature is how you can adjust what the digital readout shows by a set of switches just to the right of the dash. In between the two drivers is the branding from the Callaway plant that numbers this Corvette as #94 of only 400.
Included in the sale of this incredibly well preserved Callaway are the original corvette owner's manual, original Callaway owner's manual, a stack of receipts, an itemized list of Callaway options and specifications, and the aforementioned hard top.
As far as C4 corvettes go, it doesn't get much better than this 1988 Callaway Corvette. Never mind the fact that it is twin-turbo and cranks out nearly 400 horsepower, this 15,000 mile survivor sits today in incredible condition. Also adding to this car is the fact that this was the 35th anniversary of the Corvette and was the car that put Callaway on the map. Don't miss your chance to add this Vette to your collection.
